Is there more than one egg scale design?

I started looking for an egg scale online, and it appears to me that everyone sells the exact same design - the one that is shaped like a chicken and made by Jiffy.

I'm not saying this is a bad design. I really have no idea. I just would like to see options. Is there anything else out there?

Quite a variety of vintage egg scales on ebay, with prices from cheap to very expensive. Most work on a balance principal so an old one should work just as well as a modern model.

It looks like we are down to one manufacturer for new egg scales and they sure are some ugly! The original old Jiffy-Way scale that was sold for so many years was a perfect, nice looking, well designed scale but for some strange reason they stopped making them.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I do think it's kind of strange that there's only one vendor. I think i'll try to get an older working one that doesn't look so much like a decoration.

Well call my crazy, but I weigh my eggs with my digital Kitchen scale. It is very precise and I just put a soft cloth on the top to keep the eggs from rolling off. On with the egg, hit the tare button to reset to zero and do the next one and the next one...
It's just a nice quality battery or 110 powered scale and weighs in ounces or grams.

I happen to be one of those people that likes to weigh everything! So I have lots of scales, 2 Weight Watchers (that I got at garage sales-I use those for weighing hamburger when I'm making up patties), a large digital postal scale for packages that goes up to 150 pounds, a smaller digital postal scale for letters and smaller packages that goes up to 10 pounds, and a digital jewelry scale. I also have one of those hen-shaped egg scales. I also had an antique egg scale but since I didn't have chickens at the time, I sold that one on eBay!

The jewelry scale is the most accurate but also the most delicate. Since I don't want to subject it to the abuse of daily use, I use the small postal scale, as it weighs in ounces and fractions thereof. I put a small plastic container on it before I turn it on and it adjusts automatically to zero. Then I put the egg in the container to get the weight of just the egg. I compared the results with the jewelry scale and it's not quite as accurate (it rounds up the fractions of an ounce, while the jewelry scale is right on), but it's close enough for me.

The jewelry scale and the larger postal scale--which is not good for fractions of ounces at all--both were very expensive (around $150.00), so those are not good choices, especially considering the delicate nature of the jewelry scale. The smaller postal scale was also rather expensive ($90.00) but since I already had it (used to sell a lot of stuff on eBay and I needed it), that's what I use. Otherwise, I would probably buy one of those kitchen scales that another poster mentioned. I don't feel that the hen-shaped scale or the Weight Watchers scales are very accurate. I think a kitchen scale is probably your best choice.

This is the original Jiffy-Way egg scale that everyone likes. Someone should talk to the folks at Jiffy-Way and tell them to haul this design out of storage and start making them again.

I like the Jiffy design...it has that great chicken design. But if you want practicality, a good old digital kitchen scale is the way to go. I put a small bowl on top, reset the scale to zero and then add my egg. My scale can toggle between grams and ounces, so I can use charts in either measurement. Just do a search for egg weights and you will find several charts to help you classify your eggs.
