Is This Impacted Crop? *UPDATE* She's Gone.....

hello,

My name is Krissyy and I am new to this board. My chicken has the same problem, but she eats all the time and the crop will not go down, I've tried the olive oil, and other remedies. What can I do this is been going on for some time. If you get an answer, let me know.

Yes, the crop is always full, it never goes down.

Do you have any suggstions. She has all of this weight she is carrying around in he crop and looks miserable.

sounds like you either need to take to a vet for a crop surgery or if you think you're up to it, do one yourself. I didn't realize until too late what was wrong with my Rocky roo and he died from a crop impaction. I did a mini necropsy after he died; I snipped open his crop with some kitchen shears and it was packed full of grass, feed, scratch grains... the grass had gotten packed and couldn't work its way down. That mass has GOT to come out or it will kill your bird. If it's not a large mass, try feeding the chicken some olive oil soaked bread, olive oil by itself, and see if it will eat some yogurt. Make sure it is taking water; crop impaction will also lead to dehydration. Hope you're able to save her.

how do I find a vet that can help me. All of my vets do not know anything about chickens.

Gertie - 6 mos old, just started laying eggs, having the good life, feeling accepted among her peers, getting scratched behind her ears, being always so polite and trusting, learning to growl and be a big girl when trouble lurked, feeling proud contributing to the flock, always looked up to the others and accepted her position, besides all that, she was a beautiful bird inside and out. She will be missed. Hubby's favorite. I'm gonna be a mess for a while.

Krissyy - look up all the info you can on this site for any info on your bird's symptoms, it's a good source and you will get support from here, at the very least. Good luck.

Oh, Luna, I'm so very sorry. You know I adore my Barred Rock girls so much, such precious souls they are. I'm sorry I couldnt be more help to you with sweet Gertie.

I'm dealing with another girl who has NO symptoms (I looked her over very well), other than she is acting off. She is calm and very tame, not her usual self. She is just standing with her head down and obviously not feeling well. She just began laying a week ago and is the picture of glowing good health. I'm thinking it may be nothing more than the roosters hurt her accidentally. I hope and pray that you have no more losses/issues for a very long time. Seems my problems are just not going away this year.

I've decided to put my girl back up in a cage by herself, feed her olive oil and bread and see what that does for her this weekend. I tried this months ago and it didn't do anything.

Does anyone out there have any other suggestions?

Specks - It doesn't end does it? Really, thank you for being there for me, I appreciate your input. The doc (he sounded very upset, and said many times she was a beautiful bird) said too many things were against her, she must have aspirated at some point with her crop being full and such, the parasite - which wasn't real bad, just another problem, her lungs and kidneys were an issue, he concluded it must have been her composition to start with.

A necropsy wouldn't be worth it, because my other three are fine and dandy. As a matter of fact, I wonder if they knew she was "off" in a health issue, they sometimes gave her a hard time, especially near the end and in a sort of like "survival of the fittest" kind of thing.

Those Barred Rocks are something, aren't they? So sweet. Almost too sweet. Ack...

Hopefully, yours is having a PMS or roo thing going on, and not something serious. Thank you again.

Awww Ginny, I am so sooo sorry. :aww
I was so hoping Gertie would come through this and feel better. The universe seems so mean so often, taking a young innocent life like that after first doling out some suffering for good measure - there are no words to mitigate for that. You surely tried so very hard to help her and you gave her the greatest gift by being a tried and true advocate and guardian, causing her to feel loved, and not alone in this trying world.

I agree about the Barred Rocks. Annie, whom I suddenly lost in July from an apparent heart attack before the age of 2, was a doll. I miss her so very much, the way she would make the most endearing eager sounds when she'd hear me approaching, the way she'd sit on the arm of my chair so content, and the way she just adored life.
They all deserve so much more time than they get. Gertie was barely getting started. I'm so terribly sorry. :aww
