Those darn tornados.

I ended up putting nest pads at the bottom and nest material over it because one of my marans wouldn't stop cracking her eggs.
Thats what i do. I have used more nesting material this year already than last year.

Woohoo! Congrats!

I hate when the eggs crack, dang it!

I refer to that particular move as the "nest tornado" where they spin all around and leave zero fluff material left under them...
What do you use for nesting material if I may ask?

It depends on what I have extra of... straw or pine shavings usually
We use shredded paper we get from the office where my husband works. It's clean and free and it doesn't tornado like that. Never have cracked eggs. Easy to transport in the car, too.

I'll have to try it!
Full disclosure: the only downside to it is that it's white and you will end up with white confetti everywhere. Not a problem for us, we live way out in the country where no one sees it and it ends up in the compost heap, but it could be unsightly in an urban setting. But I love it, we always have clean eggs bc the nests are always clean.

We live in a village and we have to keep everything clean. My chickens keep laying tiny eggs. I have only had one big egg.

Are they young? Are they Large Fowl breeds? If yes to both, be patient, the eggs will get bigger, given time. If they are bantams, you'll always get smaller eggs, sorry!
