Whew! At 13 weeks? That's pretty early... none of mine did egg songs until after they laid.

They did do alarm calling prior to egg laying, which sounds very similar, but they had a big scare when a tree fell on the coop roof.

it sounds like they are laying an egg. Nothing has scared them. I will walk outside and one is doing it in the coop.

Well maybe they are just gearing up for laying! My earliest girl laid her first egg at 15 weeks old.

Have any of your other chickens started doing the egg song at 13 weeks of age. My orpington, austrolorp and cinnamon queen have all done it now.

mine never have. but most of mine were late layers. But I don't think they did the egg song until after they started laying. now i do have a couple of loud mouths that like to make a racket at times for what seems to be no reason. LOL

My last ones did do the egg song for no reason. I now have the nesting box open just in case they are ready. Although they shouldnt start till 16 weeks. And they havent started squating.

Yesterday one of them layed their first egg. And of course i wasnt home and they all lay brown eggs. It cracked to because they took all the nesting material out.

All of my breeds lay brown eggs so its hard to tell but i think my cinnamon queen layed it

I hate when the eggs crack, dang it!

I refer to that particular move as the "nest tornado" where they spin all around and leave zero fluff material left under them...

Thanks! I have added nesting material 3 times now. I got another cracked egg today because they did it.

Those darn tornados.

I ended up putting nest pads at the bottom and nest material over it because one of my marans wouldn't stop cracking her eggs.
