Broody Blackie has been such a dedicated sitter. Her inside broody box is just an XL dog crate that I lined with cardboard so she wouldn't be disturbed by anything around her...its nice and dark and secure in there. I made her broody nestbox out of a medium-sized moving box. I folded over and taped the "wings" of the box to make a little ledge at the front and sides. Just like when she was outside... she hasn't gotten off of the fake eggs until I come scoop her up and take her outside. I put food and water in there for her just in case, but she won't touch it. When I take her outside, she does good eating, drinking, dustbathing and flapping/showing off at the other girls. I think she's telling them "you better not mess with me, I'm a boss mama!" (And of course her broody poo. I'm so glad she doesn't do that inside. I almost took a pic to post on here but realized you might not wanna see that LOL)

I planned to leave her out there for about 30 mins and check on her... but after 20 minutes I heard this horrible chicken squawk sound and I went outside and... it was Blackie. Pissed off Blackie. She was so mad that she couldn't get back to her fake eggs. I went and scooped her up right away and brought her back to her broody box, where she promptly hopped in and pancaked out over her "babies".

Now she is back to happily coo-ing and turning her fake eggs. So far so good! Hopefully fertile eggs will come this week for her.

My uncle has one that I plan to go pick up and set up for just in case....

It's just so big........ . . .

OMG YES... THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! I would die to see you hatch out a baby cochin hybrid with muffs and beard omgggggg... Im sure you'll get at least one of them broody come spring time!
glad you have a backup plan! LMAO on the poop. hmmmm doesn't sound fun at all.

I just am worried I will end up with too many roo's and won't be able to get rid of them! I am hoping to be able to pick a couple to keep in hopes of some being pullets and give others away as a straight run. But any that I keep if they turn out to be a roo I will have to try to rehome them.

OMG that is just too cute!!!!!! OFC she would go broody on you in the winter when it is cold out. LOL

My plan is to block off under their poop board in the coop for a brooder box and move a broody in there and also keep the chicks I order in there so they are out with the rest of the gang the whole time to hopefully make it easier. If I have chicks when someone is broody I will probably have to put a divider up to make 2 sections. Hoping this works like I have planned. thinking I will leaving part open so the broody can go in and out as she pleases, but don't want store bought chicks being able to do that so theirs will have to be closed off until they are bigger.

That makes sense and sounds well-planned! I have an area under the roost that I use for storage with a door. I have a 2nd door i can swap it with that is just hardware cloth in the middle because I intended to let broodys take care of babies in there but... not in the winter LOL

I think your brooding area will be awesomely successful! I literally can't wait to see babies from your girls :love

ya winter is not the best time to be using the coop to brood. I know some do it but I would worry the whole time. LOL

I will have to find a pic of it (not sure if I posted one here) that you can see where I mean. It is only 2' off of the ground but should be high enough. and has support beams coming down but I think they can get around them no problem. Guess I will see how it works out. I have a little crate (30" long) but my mom just adopted a new puppy so she is using that, and my puppy is still in the 42" one that I brooded these babies in. I have another corner of the coop that we can built out too that can attach to under it. But think I read that most times you can leave a mama with her babies out and she will protect them so think they will be fine. Just not sure how long to leave the store bought ones before I try them out with the rest. Don't think the will fit under the spot for all that long.

You did! I remember your set up - the use of space is genius. I don't think you'll have any problems with that at all.

I also think mama will do a good job of teaching the babies/protecting them. Blackie is already making a show of herself everyday while she's out and letting the other girls know that you don't mess with her. She's kind of being a Broody Bully! I think it's a good sign for when I put her out with the babies after hatch(if I get any to hatch..)
