It's creepy, yet almost humorous what we found today in the nestbox

I'd have gone with a wood myself.

You are probably cool with spiders, as I am with snakes!

LOL, too true. My hubby is a snake advocate- he tells me about the benefits of black snakes all the time. According to him they will even eat poisonous species of other snakes - I should approve of a good big blacksnake, right??!! He is still trying to convince me to this day. I don't mind spiders, I even got my olders boy a tarantula for Christmas one year. Crawl was one cool spider - we fed her pinky mice on occasion. But, snake are the bane of my exsistance. I'm sure the good lord had a perfectly sound reason for creating them, but it's a mystery to me, lol. Rodents also are OK in my book - mice, rats, and other furries have never bothered me. I must have had a traumatic experience with snakes as a child that I can't recall. I love (or at least find interesting) nearly ever other species on the planet, lol. I got not a clue why I hate them so much - probably marks me as a primitive, lol. Ohyeah - I HATE scorpians too. We had them all over this place last year, even inside the house. Now that we have chickens I haven't seen ANY this year. GO CHICKIES GO!!!

Next time aim the shovel for behind the head. I've killed snakes that ate my quail etc, but I would never cut one in half so that it would suffer like that. Not trying to make you feel bad, just wanted you to think about it a little. I am a meat eater etc.. but I like to think that animals are killed humanely before I digest them.... and if I were to run over something accidentally with a lawnmower or something, I would end it suffering as best I could.

He tried, it moved.. Looked for it after it slithered away-coudnt find it.

I know black snakes are good. But finding it in the nestbox, with its jaws wrapped around a golfball-
If we relocated it far enough to not come for the eggs, then it wouldn't come for the mice either, right?

I advise not getting into a discussion here Lilbiz,,, you aren't going to win it. If you relocate it you'll have folks up in arms about moving your problem to someone else's location. If you admit to killing it, bad you! You're supposed to let it eat your chickens and eggs,, not punish it for what comes naturally. If you shoot it you could accidently hit your neighbor, if you whack it with a shovel and it moves you should have foreseen it, if you go to grab it and it bites you you've probably poisened it with your blood. Just smile and say "Well isn't that precious?"

My 6'5" brother is scared of snakes. I love him, he is wonderful and for many years he was my next door neighbor ( about 900 yards away). He is a horrendous housekeeper and has had all sorts of animals move in and out of his house. Just for fun I "relocated " about 5 or 6 of them to his yard. He called me in a panic one morning, He had been taking a shower when one crawled out of the area around the shower faucet close to his head. All full of soap he ran out in his yard and threw towel with snake in his driveway. The towel stayed there for about 2 years.

Really glad you tried to get it behind the head anyway.
