It's creepy, yet almost humorous what we found today in the nestbox

I never saw a snake in my nest boxes, but I missed a few eggs several days in a row and thought for sure I had one "visiting". After a few days I went to gather eggs and had a golf ball missing and haven't lost anymore eggs! I've been told that snakes cannot pass a golf ball and it would eventually kill them. One way to deter egg loss, huh.

Beautiful snake! I'm sure my 12 y/o DD would've wanted to adopt it.

But that’s coming from a gal who rescued a garter snake from her chickens, painted its (minor)wounds with Wound Kote, and turned it loose out in the really tall grass!

Now, if a spider got on me, I’d scream like a little girl and jump around like a break dancer with his pants on fire . . .

relocated it to MIL's property...

Now how many are going to give MIL's a "present" lol with the best of intentions of course!!

I have a very vivid imagination,, we could make a fortune off the video!!

LOL.. You are bad. Sounds like me. One great way to get my first husband to go away fast would be to turn on a horror movie. Needless to say, I watched them a lot! hee hee
Current hubby doesn't care for spiders. ( sorry for giving away your weakness..

) Good thing he is a good guy, otherwise I'd have to wave one in front of his face!!

OMG.. awesome description/visual !!

Wait till you come home late one night and check eggs in the dark reaching under hens as you go and find a snake. Not a good feeling. I get the hens out as I check now.

I'm so sorry that happened.

I had never read an account before of a black snake taking anything but eggs (I imagine it would be inclined to take little chicks too but hopefully they are kept indoors or in some other way really secure when that young). If it was a sizable pullet, that it really quite worrisome. I wouldn't want them in my coop either (!), indeed wouldn't suggest chickens should just live amongst them. Just myself don't wish to kill them if I could find another way, having never innately disliked or feared them, as I seem to with spiders! (which I still don't kill but fervently want them elsewhere like yesterday!) Nothing disturbs me more than relentlessly irresponsible humans (e.g. letting their dogs loose to create devastation) but unfortunately we can't eradicate them!
