Janoel Incubation Experience

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss.... that really sucks, and it makes me so mad that these stupid predators cause us so much problems. I mean, I know they are just doing what comes naturally to them, but go do it somewhere else! haha
But I'd say definitely a trail camera, if you can! I have several of them (I use them mainly for deer season) but now have one pointed at my rooster coop. Here's a big possum I caught on camera a couple months ago.
Wow your possums eat chickens?... In Australia they're only herbivores and the worst they do is move into your roof and bang around. I couldn't imagine worrying about skunks and what not. Though foxes are a problem here and my partner and I have put out some traps and the game camera though the foxes are smart and the only thing we caught was the neighbours cat who we promptly returned safe and sound... though a little cranky that he was stuck in a cage lol.

Here's a picture of a Aussie possum who used to visit my old flat years ago... he/she was very cute.

And the neighbours cat going into the trap on the game camera.... My partner hunts hence the game camera and the trap is completely humane, the door just closes down and they're stuck in a small cage. Unfortunately the foxes aren't interested at all. Ignor the date... we don't worry about setting the details properly.

Oh yes, possums here will kill chickens in a heartbeat. They don't actually eat much of it though. Just the neck and breast, I believe. Foxes and coyotes are bad here too. They will take the bird, carcass and all. You might be left with a few feathers.

That is a cute little Aussie possum, but I still don't like them! lol

That's cool that you got the cat on camera too! We hunt whitetail deer here (and squirrel and wild turkeys), which is why we have several cameras out and about but I took one to watch my chickens.

Haha understandable that you don't like them but here they really aren't much of a nuisance and are protected.
We hunt feral pigs with our two dogs and also shoot (well my partner does) foxes, rabbits and fallow deer which are also feral here :).
Foxes and feral cats are the worst worry we have other then that no other predatory animals here, some feral dogs but none around our property. The cats don't bother with the grown birds so foxes are the worst for the chickens. They also will go into your coop and kill every bird only eating one or two.

We get foxes on camera, but I've never seen one while out hunting. Well, not on my current property. We saw two a few years ago and my hubby shot at one, but we never found it. I'd love to have a fox mount over my fireplace.
And possums are open season year round to shoot around here! Big nuisances.
We had some ferel pigs come round a couple years ago. It was summer so I didn't have a rifle with me, but they got close enough that I could have shot a few. They demolished my sweet corn plot in under 48 hours! It was horrendous the damage they did so quickly.

Yep pigs are the worst for destroying property. They can dig up a 50 acre paddock in one night and breed like rabbits. They've also helped wipe out a few native animals here in Aus so they're kind of top priority when hunting. Plus its fun to go hunting with the dogs. Watching a dog do what it was born to do and forming a great bond, working with and training your dogs is really rewarding. Not for every one but I enjoy it :).

We have an nuisance here called a nutria. I believe they were imported from Australia to eat the tree frogs in Louisiana. Then some folks brought them to Oregon thinking they would be the next beaver pelt. Since they are like giant rats no one wanted them and then they had no natural predators, so they got out of control and started wiping out native species. You can shoot them without a permit they are such a nuisance.

Wild pigs are amazing the amount of damage they do! Do you head out art night with spot lights and shoot when you see their red eyes?

I got the hot wire working at the base of the layer house today and made sure nothing was grounding it. My daughter and I found where it had entered. Set the humane trap with cat food. Fingers crossed. I'm looking on line for a wildlife camera.

I found an egg with a chick stuck in it while candeling. I feel bad. It is still moving a bit in there, but I know it won't make it.

Guess what!? I went online and found 2 Farm Innovator bators on craigslist for $50! One fan is broken, so it's still air, but I'm tinkering with it. Do you think I could hatch in there?

If they hold temp, I'm sure you could use them! You could always add a little cheap computer fan. I have several of them! I used to hoard computer parts, never needed them for computers, but maybe for incubators!!

And if they don't hold temp, there are websites that sell replacement heaters.
Good luck, sounds like a steal!

The one with forced air is working great! I am wondering if any of you have used a still air to hatch. I will look into the computer fan. Sounds smart. I know they make replacement fans as well, so I may go that route. I just really want to stop hatching in my Janoel to preserve it.

These polystyrene incubators make the Janoel look like a Catilac! I love how the Janoel has a plastic grate over the fan and heating element. I love how the Janoel has a removable plastic grate on the bottom for cleaning. These have machine cloth that cannot be removed stuck in the Styrofoam. I am not sure what to lay down so I can hatch and clean up?

Hats off to Janoel!

My SIL likes the styrofoam ones, she says they hold the temp better, but I like the convenience of easy cleanup with my janoel knock-off. I'm pretty sure she uses paper towels at hatch time, but I would try that soft, foamy, holey shelf liner stuff if it were me. And I think she just rinses it down with bleach water after each hatch.

I candled my eggs again last night, because I wanted to weigh them again. They are losing weight a little fast, but the air cells look good. I added just a touch of water in one corner. I had a couple that were a little suspect, so I changed the batteries in my flashlight and wow! One that I wasn't sure of was moving like crazy, the other was definitely clear. So out of 18 to start, I had 3 clear, and one quitter/blood ring with basically no development at all. Barely a little gray spot when I opened it. My other 14 look awesome! Day 10 was yesterday when I did all that. Day 11 today! Half way there!!
