Janoel Incubation Experience

So these are the simple little mods I made to my Janoel (real one) which made a significant difference in performance.

I put a window/door weather stripping. The lid fits nice and snug. My temp and humidity are no longer bouncing around.

I added 2 holes for even water distribution between the 2 channels. With out this I would have to open the incubator every time to add water, or only add water to one channel with overflow. The overflow would end up spreading out in the larger area and drip out the drain hole.

Adding water is easy, and I don't have to disturb the eggs.

I have 4 internal thermo/hygro's and 2 probes. Right now they are all operating within a safe range from each other.

Sooo, with this said and done. I set my Naraganset Turkey's tonight. It's only day one and i'm already nervous. First time with turkeys, not only hatching them but raising them also.

Wish me luck! These eggs cost me $5 each, i'll be choked if I go and blow it.

Welcome Misfit!

Lots of great advice.

I have a real Janoel. This is my 4th hatch and I have to agree with you particularly on this one point- leave it alone. I opened the bator less than ever and just let it go. However, this time around I incubated in my Hovabator and hatched in the janoel. I used the cheap mercury thermometer in both of the units. I found little fluctuation in each bator when I just didn't fuss...or was it because I just didn't check?!

At 37.5 my Janoel would be well over 100. It seemed to hold strong at 37.2. I agree about the water. I had just too much going on and my hygrometer was registering around 35% putting 1/4c in at setting and again at candling. This is my best hatch yet..OK I'm am counting the two that are zipping right now (fingers crossed) and that would give me 6 out of 7, BUT upon candling last night on the 7th I found it must have quit at day 15. They are blue so it's hard to tell. If I don't count it that would be 100%!

Love your idea with my eggs. I can do a 5 day stagger on hatches, so candling and removing at that point will work. I also like your plan on candling and giving an internal pip to move things along. i have never had them hatch on day 23.

Question everyone????? I have a still air styro. I was considering using it to hatch as I only have the Janoel, forced air styro and the still. I could set everything tomorrow if I use the still air to hatch the next hatch. Anyone think this is too risky? I had such great results hatching in the Janoel and I really want these project eggs to hatch...
Thank you! We hatched in the styro still air before we put the pc fan in there..didnt see any issues that could tell. We had 2 not hatch but one was not flipped and the other died at lockdown so i dont think that has to do with the styro or still air. To put in the pc fan we just wired it to a 12v cord and then covered the fan in 1/4" hardware cloth then laid it on the floor. We also cut the metal floor grid out of ours, then used deck screws to hold it down so now it is removeable to bleach the entire base and get it really clean.

Turkey eggs are hard to incubate, good luck to you!!

Pretty eggs. And wow, that's some moola! I wish you the best of luck!
If it makes you feel any better, I knew nothing about hatching turkeys either, and I got one to hatch. She zipped right out of there, no problem, so you will be fine!!

i wish mine would do that...those buggers dont wanna hatch for me so far this year. In all fairness several attempts were not their fault..the power went out for 12hrs for one batch, another batch was in a styro that spiked to 102 and another batch was all shipped eggs with fertility problems so really wasnt in their favor. i have some more local turkey eggs though so i hope they hatch.

Keep trying, you will get it! What kind are you trying? I had a 48-hour power outage on day 14-15, but got the incubator hooked up to a generator after 18 hours. It got to below 0F that night. Incubator went down to about 65F. And my little turkey survived, along with 4 ducks. 2 ducks hatched, then the turkey, then 2 more ducks lol.

Here's a pic from last week - 5 weeks old self-blue slate. (My ducks were mean to the turkey, so I bought 2 golden comets to put with it). I tell you, she is the sweetest thing. (Not acutally sure if she's a she, or he's a he LOL)

Thought I would show you guys my meaties. They will spend a week in here, then into the main barn. From there they go outside to enjoy the sunshine and greenery. They will be happy, lots of ticks and flys this year for em to eat.

Typical broiler, sleeping as close to the food as possible HAHA!

This run is Bourbon Red and Royal Palm....i had blue slate in another batch but now my friends tom got killed so no more blue slate for the moment.

Very cute!! Our meaties dont show up until May 20th we have 30 coming. We figure between the 30 meaties and the extra roosters from hatching we should have enough chicken for the year. Now to get a pig or two lol.

Sorry about your friends tom. I was actually hatching duck eggs. The gal I got the duck eggs from had bourbon reds and blue slates also. She wasn't sure of their fertility yet because they were young, so she gave me 2 of each eggs with my duck eggs. One BR was infertile, and one of each quit early in the incubation process. This was the only one that made it. Can you guess if its male or female?

My hubby wants calves or pigs.. I'm just not ready for that yet!!

i can't tell a whole lot from the angle in the pic but i'm guessing it is a hen. If the down on its neck is coming out at 5 weeks it should be a tom...a pic from the front would be better but by 2 months you should know for sure....Toms will also start displaying as young as 4 weeks old.
