Janoel Incubation Experience

I'm with ya on that one. I found old barn windows with glass the size of cd cases, i'll try to calk those on and see how it works. Might make my machine a little heavier, but also might be worth it.

I wouldn't care if it added 5 pounds lol I hope its thin enough to stick for you. I did rough up the plastic around the edges to try to get good adhesion.
I cut one pretty big on one side, opposite side is smaller and I made it a little higher. The other 2 sides opposite each other, I cut much smaller and more toward the corner, and put them higher since they are along the sides of the turner. Good luck with yours!

I have mine set at 37.2, the room in my barn sits at 20.

I have turned mine down to 37.4...

I am thinking of even going down one more as it seems to vacillate from correct up to 100.4!
I like the idea of detaching the probes. I have wondered if where they are situated adversely affect their reading. I think I'll do that after this batch. So thanks!
I've also considered some type of gasket, because my lid doesn't sit flush. I have a nickel under one corner to make it the lid connect better. But I think it needs more ventilation holes before I make a gasket. After this batch, I plan to drill more holes in the base, that I can plug or tape off, or open when necessary. Mine has one hole on one corner to be able to squirt water in, and the 4 drain holes on the bottom, and 2 waffled holes on top.
I have the same as you. Anyone think MORE ventilation would be a benefit?

OK
I couldn't figure out any other way to post a picture of my map on OneNote, so I took a photo...

As you can see the green question marks were recorded on 3/14. While I would like to think that when I candle Thursday night there will be some development, I don't think so. I am pretty sure they are clears.

This is ?done on Surface Pro3 with my stylus. I am still getting the hang of it, but this works for me. I like to write notes and this I can save and refer to easily as I am very visual. You could do a spreadsheet if you liked it better or just a piece of paper in a file. I'm just needing to be REALLY good about notes at this point in my breeding program as I attempt to really create something.

Nice I had a similar looking map just on a piece of paper for my hatches.

About not being able to see through the bottom... I also find it a real pain trying to look through the little clear spots in the lid but never considered making my own viewing holes. Great idea :).

I have spreadsheet and drawing and notes along the way. I weighed all mine, so I did a spreadsheet to see if they were losing enough as we went along.
Looked at my layout drawing and found that the ones that made it to lockdown were mostly around the outside edge! But then realized the inner ones were my clears, so it was more just luck of the draw haha. Nice to see I'm not the only "geek" about it. (I mean that in the nicest way!)

Notice I have an entire row of clears in there?

They are all weighed with weights listed on the egg. I have never weighed before lockdown to see if they are correct!

I'm always worried they will get cold and die at the last minute. But this time I will.

I believe doing a dry incubation will pay off. Here in Oregon my humidity is around 35-44% with no water in there! I really hope this does the trick. I'm so glad to be away right now from the house. When I return I will be at the halfway mark and can candle and remove eggs from the bator. I'm lining up more eggs from Papa's Poultry in April. Just narrowing down what I'm getting!!!!! It's soooo hard. I think I am going to be careful to get new blood for existing lines and maybe one more new one.

I know this is off topic, but what is everyone's favorite breed?

Right now, my humidity with no water would be sitting at 10%, wish a could do a dry incubation. I know during the summer months here the humidity levels are crazy! Might even be too high for a dry lol.

I just got the brinsea spot check in the mail today... have you ever used one? As of right now I have an Oasis, and 2 acu's sitting in my incubator (my home made one) and they seem pretty close together. I wanna put my spot check with my others to check it's accuracy but i'm a day away from lock-down and I don't want to disturb my eggs. I candled last night. Out of the 31 I set, 5 were unfertilized and 2 were dead. Lots of movement! My kids are getting excited. (i'll post pics of my home made incubator I built in a couple hours)

As for a favorite breed, I love Black Australorps...I have always had them and have never been disappointed. Then in a close second would be Buff Orpingtons. This is my first year with buffs and I am impressed. I have seperated 7 hens and a roo into their own coop. I am hoping to breed them when I get back from Vancouver. Need some time to get rid of the Black Ausralorp rooster and Rhode island red rooster juices out of them first!

I have hatching eggs coming in from Papa's Poultry in late April to May (I left the shipping date up to him). I'm going to get in the Lavender Cuckoo Orpingtons, Black Split to Lavender Marans, and some assorted Silkies (cause I have a thing for broodies).

The thermometer issue is huge. I have heard good things from lots of folks about the spot check. I don't have a thermometer trust yet, so I really want to know about your experience with all three of yours. It's hard to KNOW. I want to be sure. If this next hatch does well I will be happy with the Meade scientific therm/Hygrom I bought.

I have one australorp. I love her. Poor girl so does my cockerel! It may be time for a saddle. She lays wonderfully and is pretty. Good feed to egg conversion. I would like to get more of her. Do you have a Cock and ship eggs?

Did you get these from the auction? I don't have the Lavender Cuckoo. Someday.... I want the Lemon Cuckoo next and I am getting my coveted Silver Laced Orpington chicks!!!!!!!! I'm so excited.

I'm driving down and hopefully catching a service at Bethel church with my daughter who has agreed to drive with me for the fun of it. It sure is great when your kids grow up and decide they like you again!
