Janoel Incubation Experience

So now that, that post is done i got all the replied out of the way.

i own a Janoel 8-48 a real one. It has been running non-stop for 140+ days and constantly incubating. The conditions at my house vary in a single day they can go from 50F-110F, the incubator sits 3 ft from the door outside, it sits 1 ft from a air vent that doesnt work and just lets in cold air from under the house, and it sits in front of a large single pane window. So basically i have in pretty much the worst conditions possible and i still get 100% on local eggs. My janoel does not have a single modification made to it. The eggs get labeled, dated and put in the bator(where there may be other eggs already incubating) no water is ever put in my bator, the lid is put back on the bator, turner hooked up, bator turned on. Eggs are candle once between 4-10 days depending on if i need space or not, clears, bloodrings, dead eggs are pulled. On day 18 eggs move to the hatcher with one foil bread pan of water or one channel of water if it is in styro bator. Eggs hatch on day 19 and day 20...the evening of day 21 all eggs are opened thru the aircell. If anything is dead it gets disposed of, anything alive is checked for veins then an internal pip is made for them and they are placed back in the bator or the membrane is pulled back and the head is lifted up so it is not stuck if all veins are receded.

Basically dont open the bator unless needed, if you live in a very wet place dont add water until lockdown, at lockdown you only need 40-60% humidity to hatch, hatching at day 19-20 is fine...hatching at day 22-23 is not good, those chicks usually die, stop being obsessed with the temp and humidity...take out the extra meters and set the heat at 37.5C then dont adjust it, stop modifying the janoel...dont put extra holes, insulation, seals etc on it. The real janoel is a solid design that incubates excellantly if left alone.

The biggest problems i have seen with the janoel and most incubators is to much fiddling...to much worrying...the temp went up..the temp went down...the humidity says its to high...it says its to low...i candled 3 times before day 7..i'm worried it doesnt turn enough. If you have a real janoel you are really really worrying way way to much. Incubators are designed to be set and left alone, by fiddling with them and turning the temps up and down and adding water and taking out water and opening and closing vents, your really making it hard on the incubator and the eggs. i know because i did all the same stuff and i had horrid hatches like 0 of 15....1 of 12...4 of 20...etc.

Just try it once....take everything out..put the eggs in..cover any extra vents you made...take off the insulation....ziptie the sensor back where they should be...shut the lid and turn it on....candle once between day 7-10 removed back eggs then candle at lockdown on day 18. You will have good hatched i even get 75+% on shipped eggs.

I'm not trying to be mean at all and i hope no one takes it that way but ive run 100s of eggs thru this same incubator and learned if you leave it alone it works awesome. The only people who should be adding water before day 18 are those in dry climates like say arizona...most other wet states have enough ambient humidity to do perfectly fine incubating eggs.

I too owned a Janoel Chinese incubator. First hatch was a learning curve and I had around 60% hatch rate. Second hatch made a few adjustments and had about 80% hatch rate. Third hatch I was sure I had it figured out and would have great success. And on day 5 the heating element went out and it no longer heats. Fan still blows but no heat. And of course this occurred around 3 am.

All eggs were collected fresh from my own residence. I guess you get what you paid for. I definitely won't be buying another one.

I've had great success in the past with hova bator foam incubators. But wanted something easier to clean with auto turner. Now to decide. Brinsea or Rcom.
If you bought the chinese "janoel" knockoff yes they are notrious for breaking and being junk.....if you bought a real Janoel they are solid machines with quality parts that dont break. There is a post on this thread that shows the difference. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/617266/janoel-48-egg-incubator-automatic-turner-humidity/10

I have a knockoff and it has done fine. I bought it used, from a local guy, and he had several successful hatches in it, and I have too. I do plan to order a replacement heating element to have on hand, but so far, so good! (after I quit worrying about it so much! lol)

I'm not saying that I recommend the knockoff... but if you got one without knowing it any better, it can work.

You can get a knock off that will work well but it is like 1 in 3 so it is a luck of the draw thing and often they require modification as you have done with yours. i got my janoel8-48 for $86 including shipping off ebay so it was an easy choice to get the name brand vs the knock off for $65.

@WVduckchick , this picrure is from last year when I treied setting really old peafowl eggs. All eggs pictured weighed 95-125 grams.

42 eggs at that size... not bad!! My biggest duck egg weighed 81.1 grams. Was that your experiment on old eggs? I can't remember how it turned out.

Welcome Misfit!

Lots of great advice.

I have a real Janoel. This is my 4th hatch and I have to agree with you particularly on this one point- leave it alone. I opened the bator less than ever and just let it go. However, this time around I incubated in my Hovabator and hatched in the janoel. I used the cheap mercury thermometer in both of the units. I found little fluctuation in each bator when I just didn't fuss...or was it because I just didn't check?!

At 37.5 my Janoel would be well over 100. It seemed to hold strong at 37.2. I agree about the water. I had just too much going on and my hygrometer was registering around 35% putting 1/4c in at setting and again at candling. This is my best hatch yet..OK I'm am counting the two that are zipping right now (fingers crossed) and that would give me 6 out of 7, BUT upon candling last night on the 7th I found it must have quit at day 15. They are blue so it's hard to tell. If I don't count it that would be 100%!

Love your idea with my eggs. I can do a 5 day stagger on hatches, so candling and removing at that point will work. I also like your plan on candling and giving an internal pip to move things along. i have never had them hatch on day 23.

Question everyone????? I have a still air styro. I was considering using it to hatch as I only have the Janoel, forced air styro and the still. I could set everything tomorrow if I use the still air to hatch the next hatch. Anyone think this is too risky? I had such great results hatching in the Janoel and I really want these project eggs to hatch...

That was last year, and the results were *horrible*, lol. Some of the eggs were over a month old and many were stored in too warm a room. Out of all of those eggs, only a few started and only one hatched.

Heehee... Not a good result, but still a good experiment. You proved old eggs aren't very viable! lol

Interestingly, the one that did hatch was 19 or 20 days old.
