Janoel

Thank you for your reply MisfitMarie :) You have put at ease somewhat! Im just really worried about this stupid humidity reading Im getting. Ok, so we have filled both chambers with warm water, half closed, fully closed, fully opened the vents, taken out the water and put in teatowels dampened with warm water instead, put wet warm paper towel over the eggs, sprayed the eggs lightly, put wet sponges in there... I think I've covered everything!
Put the eggs in on the 26th Nov at 8pm, and its now 17th Dec 10am here, so hopefully Ive miscalculated hehe!
On my janoel 42 the temp says 37.5 and the other gauge says 35.9, and humidity is 39%... No, not shipped eggs and I have been opening occasionally to wet the eggs or add paper towels. Since no pipping has occured, other than when the first chick hatched and we removed that one yesterday. One chick out of 20 so far. One eg was rocking last night for a while but hasnt moved since :(

I could be wrong, but if I had put the eggs in on November 26th at 8pm...I wouldn't even count Day 1 until November 27th at 8pm...which would put your eggs at ... Day 20! The night of the 18th would be your Day 21, if I'm counting correctly (I'm a little tired)... and you MIGHT start to see more action then. I would certainly give it another three or four days before I started to worry. Sounds like you had a real early-bird.

It sounds like you're adding a lot of fluid to your incubator, which is good... but maybe consider getting a second monitor? I actually have two in every incubator now, because a couple of mine proved to be WAY off on the humidity. One of them was reading about 15% high and the other about 10% low.

I've heard that actually wetting the eggs has an opposite effect, due to the evaporation process. I would try to keep water off of the eggs, and instead, just wet the towels and the water containers and sponges, etc.

Baby chicks know ALL the right things to do to drive us absolutely BONKERS!

So, just try to relax! I recommend getting a second humidity monitor to compare to the one you have. But, especially if there's any fogging up in the incubator (you'll see water eventually running down the sides), I would be curious as to how accurate yours actually is.

Let us know how it goes! :thumbsup

Aahhhhh.... Calming down as I write ha! Thank you for your reassurance, I will stop counting my chicks before they hatch ;) Will try your suggestions about not wetting eggs etc and let you know how things go, thanks again :)

When I was readying my incubator for lockdown I was putting the eggs back in and i'm sure i could hear chirping, but i might be going crazy, so getting back to the point Does anyone know if this is possible that they could but chirping this early? :)

Arrrh waiting!!! I'm sure this is going to be the best and worst part of the hatch!

Yes this is possible, my 2nd time incubating I had one chirping on day 19 when I placed it into lockdown. Dumb me miscounted my days, was 1 day late on lockdown. Chicks were okay thankfully.

  • Yorkshirecoop i just had a look at your polish pictures they're so pretty! I would love some in the future in fact i might get some they next time i hatch!! :)
Thank you!! Yeah they are a pretty bird and super friendly if you tame them from hatching. They can also be over tamed to the point of being pests!! The only points I would make about them is that they don't do well in a mixed flock, their fancy crests attract others in to feather picking. Also because of the fancy crests they have limited vision and should be supervised when free ranging. They are quite happy being in a run though it makes them feel safe. Crests should also be checked regular for mites and problems. Other than that they are fab birds. If all goes to plan I should be selling hatching eggs next spring. Some will be frizzle as I have a frizzle roo in with smooth hens and a couple of frizzle hens in with a smooth roo.

Question guys - our original Janoel 48 incubator is the self-turning type. We are now on day 12, and hubby noticed this morning the eggs seemed to be spending a lot of time in one position - turns out the turning was not turning. The plug from the motor to the turning trays had separated. Possibly for 24 hours? Is this going to do any harm? How soon will I know if it has stopped chicks - can I candle tonight or will they not die until later on?

Thankfully 2 new incubators collected from the post office today and eggs safely turning again. I am hoping there is still something alive in there being rocked back to sleep!! Adaptations being made to the original inc although from now on it will be a dedicated hatcher unless needed in an emergency.

Emchick I put a margarine tub in our hatcher with some water in it when I was having huge trouble at lockdown with low humidity. I used a big tall tub like that so new hatchlings couldn't fall in and drown, it worked a charm and got the humidity up about 8% which was enough to get the chicks hatched safely.

MisfitMarie any news, its all very uneventful here although i think, but i'm not sure, one of my eggs have moved. Other than that not alot has happened, Whats going on with your eggs? :)

I don't have much to report on my end, either! The anticipation is killing me!

I haven't checked for any wobbling eggs yet, but I will have to do that when I get home... Those darn eggs! Takin' their sweet time!

There might be a late hatch for me, anyway. The temp in my Janoel 48 was running significantly lower than they should have been before lockdown. We'll see!

TWO MORE DAYS UNTIL HATCH DAY!

None yet! I keep eyeing the incubator... Tomorrow is hatching day, so I probably won't be getting any sleep tonight. Yay, coffee!
