As My eggs are shipped, I am planning on leaving them upright in an egg carton in the incubator for 48 hours before starting to turn them. I am also planning on doing a dry-incubation this time, as the last few I've used the wet technique and it hasn't worked very well.

Hello everyone! I would like to join you on this little hatch along. I set my 13 eggs on Dec 31st. Today is day 6. I candled the other day cause I couldn't wait, and saw some veins. I do find it easier to wait till day 10 to candle to see what is going on. This is my 3rd batch. My first batch was lost due to a 10hr power outage, they were only 5 or 6 days in. Second batch, no idea what happened. On my eggtopsy some people suggested my humidity may have been too high, some suggested low temp. Some offered poor ventilation.

So this batch I have a higher temp. I added another thermometer (3 total now, two inside, one is part of the incubator) and I have decreased the humidity this time around. I am hoping for more success as no chicks happened the last time. I also opened the two little red cap vents in my Farm Innovators 2200 circulated incubator, so hopefully ventilation will be better in case that was the cause. None ever pipped externally. Never heard chirping either. So crossing my fingers. I am still new at this and I am still learning the whole thing.

Day 10 for the broody hen, Day 8 for the incubator.

I saw definite veins in the incubator eggs. Didn't want to handle the hen's eggs much, but she tossed one, so I'm hoping she knows what's what.

Almost at 2 week mark. Waiting but not very patiently.

Saturday afternoon I'm going to be moving the 16 week old pullets from the brooder room/run and get things setup for the baby chicks.

With just 37 eggs left I'm hoping that I'll have all them hatch.

So I managed to get some silkie eggs sent to me.. And one of them has already been developing. Though only enough to have a dot an two small veins. I immediately put it in the incubator after recalling having seen about eggs that were pre incubated actually hatching.. The other eight eggs I'm letting sit upright until tomorrow to help stabilize the air cell.

Got a dozen more eggs today! The post office took forever with this one, hope they're OK. Now have 11 silkie eggs 2 days in and 12 Phoenix eggs just added. Now to make a hatcher...

When I was hatching Golden Laced Wyandotte they did well with the dry hatching. I tried hatching my Blue Splash Marans in the same incubator with the Wyandottes and they were dead in the shell shrink wrapped. I run them by themselves with humidity around 55% to 60% and they hatched better. The Wyandotte drowned in the egg when they broke the liner in the shell.

Well, 96 eggs set yesterday, only 14 older than 7 days with the oldest being 9 days. These are eggs from my generation 1 layers (I'm doing some inbreeding and started with BCM roos and Red Sexlink hens.)







There's a nice feature with the Ova 100, press two buttons on the front and the trays level. Otoh, there's an annoying alarm that signals just before the trays turn, presumably to ensure nobody gets their finger lopped off. It means, though, that every 45 minutes 24 hours a day that alarm goes off...sheesh. All of that could have been avoided by simply putting a sensor on the door...if the door's opened, automatically level and don't move till its closed...

I'm going to write a full review of the Ova 100 after this first hatch. One thing is that it was impossible to get the RH% low enough to satisfy me. I wanted it to be 40% without eggs in as that would suggest I can keep it low enough to get the right weight loss. The water tray and tray cover that comes with it won't get me lower than 65%. If they made the lid so it actually sealed on the tray, I could get down to 55%. If I had a container that had, say, a 1" opening...that would get me 40%...but things that have that small an opening tend not to hold much water...so multiple refills a day.

Luckily, things work fine with the Humidity Pump...but that's typically a $100 optional extra.

For the record, I'm running at 99.6F, RH 35%, egg turning every 45 minutes. I'll start a cooling period of 60 minutes every 24 hours on day 8...and lockdown at RH 65% on day 19.

My biggest concern is the dang room temperature alarm. It goes off even if the bator temperature hasn't dropped...the bator decides it will be too much work to maintain the temperature or something...

I weighed all eggs individually, and also the trays themselves. Re-weighed the trays today after 24 hours, and I have a .84% weight reduction. Ideal weight loss is .67%, so I bumped the RH up a little to 42% to slow weight loss.
