January 2023 Hatch-a-long

No broken shells, and the box was really well packed. Seems like they didn’t get too cold either. The eggs are three days old. First newbie question: they’re brown eggs, so I don’t see much of anything when I candle them with really bright flashlight (pics below). Was hoping to assess the air pocket. Do I need an even brighter light?

Failure is not an option!

Storing them points down in the box they came in until tomorrow. Then we’ll incubate and hope for the best.

Shine the light through the fat end. You may need to move the egg around a bit to see if any floating aircells or anything else. But always shine light through the fat end and in a dark room.

Edit what breeds did u get?

Thanks, I will try that.

These are supposed to be Black Australorps. Brooding layers for my aunt, so hopefully we get a few hens. Roosters aren’t welcome in their coop, so will need a home or become meat for the freezer.

I found this thread! I'm super excited because I'm doing my first hatch ever! My husband wanted to give me a Christmas present, so I suggested an incubator - hello Nurture Right 360! I put 23 eggs into it and will be candling them for the first time on day six, which is tomorrow. Mostly blue eggs from my prairie bluebells, crossed with my (production red? RIR-mix?) rooster Speckle, so they should all be green egg layers. I also have 4-5 green eggs in there (starlight green eggers + Speckle), so they might lay all green or half green, half brown, depending on Speckle.

I also put in one egg from my SGE that lays tan (Cinnamon), because her eggs are always extra large and she lays them every day, so I think that one will end up laying a darker brown. And I think I finally figured out which blue egg my favorite PBB (Chipmunk) lays, so then I had to put one of hers that I knew was for sure hers in there, because she's really pretty and lays large blue eggs every day, and that was the 23rd egg.

So I'm hand turning Chipmunk's egg along with one of the green ones and Cinnamon's egg until I candle tomorrow, after which I hope I'll have 22 or less that are still developing. Chipmunk's known egg is either 3-4 days behind the others, so I'll probably keep turning it while everyone else is in lockdown, assuming it makes it that far. I hope so, I really love her coloring.

I sprayed all my eggs with hydrogen peroxide until they were dripping, and scrubbed off any dirt. I had 3 eggs that were very dirty, and of course they were the largest blue ones, so I wanted to hatch them anyway and needed a way to clean them. Has anyone here ever used the Manna Pro Egg Cleanser to clean hatching eggs prior to incubation? It was either that or the H2O2, and I know they use H2O2 commercially, so I went with that - guess we'll see how it goes...

45-52% RH for stage one, 99.5% F. I checked my temperature with my reptile thermometer, and it's pretty much right on. Hoping for the best on the RH, but that's generally pretty accurate, and I think we have greater wiggle room there.

Day 21 is January 21st! Wish me luck!!!

Good luck to you! It’s so exciting and chicks are so stinking cute! 🐣 And oh, the eggs 🥚🥚🤣

I read all kind of opinions last night, and one was saying to wait until they’re 2, and one that said they do fine. I’ve hatched from hens under two and I did ok. We’ll see what happens 😁
I second this. “Recently” as in october hatched eggs from a at-the-time 10 month old pullet and 8/8 eggs hatched, plus all chicks have been healthy and growing amazing. I’ve got a few pullet eggs on the incubator right now I believe, 3 bantam eggs(10 month old pullets) and probably some eggs from my sapphire gem, maybe 8-9 months old. My first pullet egg hatch

Well, I went to add an egg and pull the oldest out of the carton, and really only had a couple little eggs. The majority of the eggs were bigger than the pullet’s eggs, but the bigger ones were from hens that were under 2. Not going to lose my mind over it (probably) 🤣 Good luck and please post pics!

I went ahead and candled my turkey + duck eggs which are 11 days from hatching. 8 turkey and 14 duck eggs in total. Of those numbers, all turkey eggs were good and growing!:celebrate 8/14 duck eggs showed no signs of growth or even fertilization though, so I went ahead and removed them to toss in the morning. the remaining 6 duck eggs looked healthy and had movement. I think i'll do one more candling on these eggs a day before lockdown, just as a precaution. I am getting close to hatching though.

I got a rooster wanting to put my hen's eggs in incubator, I have shipped eggs coming, and will be incubating on the 20th or so. the next 2 weeks hope to get fertile eggs. I will put up a pic of the rooster. He is EE mix of some sort. shiney red feathered, EE comb. His tail feathers are so long! I am hopeful, but one of the hens I wanted him to breed tried to fight him off the bat. I turned out the light.

Did you put on some Marvin Gaye?
