Hi, I'll join you. I set 23! (I paid for 16) Lavender Orpingtons and one egg from my Wheaten Marans on Thursday. I'm not sure if it's fertile, but my White Leghorn cockerel has been giving it his best try. This is my second hatch. I just hatched two Lavender Orpingtons and 1 Black Copper Marans. I started with 10 eggs. All of the Marans developed and only 3 of the Orpingtons developed. The first time was very nervewracking and exciting at the same time. As for Bantams, I think a lot of people just like them because they're cute. Some can be good broody hens. I have one Bantam hen that follows me like a puppy and lets me pick her up. She makes strange cries when I leave. It's very endearing. Oh, I also have 5 Sweetgrass turkeys in another incubator that are due to hatch on the 25th. I'm expecting 20 more Black Copper Marans eggs next week. Beware the chicken math!

Happy hatching,
Jeff

And another one bites the dust. Went to turn the eggs tonight and the one with the most cracks on it that I put wax on, just disintegrated in my hand.

We're down to 10. Reminds me of the Agatha Christie book, And Then There Were None. Crossing all my extremities that we don't go down to NONE!

What a great birthday plan, Daniel! My daughter will turn twelve in 2 1/2 weeks, the day these eggs are supposed to hatch, so I'm hoping some of them work. Happy birthday!

I like the bantams because they take up less space than LF ones. I have limited space and so it allows me to have a wider variety and a lot more chickens than I could otherwise ........ gotta have more chickens!

Edited: Good luck everyone on your hatches.

Hoping the hatching works. Candled yesterday (too early) and hoping all the speckled ones we saw were just speckled and not non-viable ones. Not going to think on that anymore.

Question, I have my eggs in a egg carton to incubate. I had read the larger end of the egg should be up. Should I take them out of this anytime, like for lockdown and put them on something else? I didn't know if the box would make it harder to hatch or not. Thinking maybe holey shelf liner, you know, that rubber type stuff? I saw someone had that in their incubator. Can't' think of what else but I didn't want to start incubating them just sitting on the bottom. That doesn't keep the big end up for their air sac.

I have mine in lock down and they are in egg cartons. If you start them at the height sitting in an egg carton and then lay them down at lock down they are getting a different temp at that height it's better to keep them the same height through the whole incubation.

I have my second batch of eggs due to hatch on July 30. I set 10 eggs on Saturday, July 9th. We candled them yesterday (7 days) and I already had babies dancing away! There is nothing more exciting. I did have to pull 2 eggs, a partridge and a black cochin. There was no development at all and the light passed through easily. So now I am watching for 3 FBCMs, 2 Splash Marans, 2 Partridge Cochins, and a Barred Cochin. I will candle again at 14 days. I can't wait to see these little ones.

Our first batch hatched on July 4. We started with 7 eggs. 4 hatched! I lost one of them.

But now I have a Blue Cochin, a Black Frizzle, and a FCBM. I just wish I could figure out what they are!

Good luck! I will check in with you soon!
