July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Thanks UT! I really appreciate the advice. They look pretty "crispy". I worry about that one especially because she had been pipped for about 36 hrs when I finally helped her out this morning, so I have no idea how long ago she actually absorbed her yolk. I'm worried about her starting to get really hungry in addition to being weak from the ordeal. I feel like my best option is gonna be to rinse and scrub with a kids toothbrush to get as much as possible off and then let them dry as much as possible in the bator before putting them in with the others. Do you wrap them in a towel to dry them a little first, or just put them right back in the bator?
Yes, dry with something before putting back in the incubator. Pretty sure I used a paper towel. They’re so little and no extra laundry for me. 🤣 Let me know how it goes.

My June chicks are turning their noses up at the dry mealworms. Good thing I bought 10lbs. 😭 Hopefully the July HAL catch on faster.

I picked up some of this from a local mill. To give as scratch and treats. It’s a beautiful feed (reminds me of Hippy Hens). Even smells good. 😍

I can't believe they won't eat the mealworms!

My La Bresse are turning their noses up at scrambled egg. I've never had a bird not go mad for it and it's my go to for when I need to give them a boost. I don't know what to make of it. It's like they don't think it's food! They also don't seem to care when I peck at things with my finger. My last chicks caught on very quickly that if I started tapping and calling them, I had something good. These ones are oblivious. I even made a fake beak using a tweezers but that didn't work.

On the other hand, they're flying through the chick starter. My last chicks only really pecked at bits here and there for the first while and didn't really eat a whole lot until day 3 or so. These ones had huge, bulging full crops on day one.

The fussy chicks we have! It's funny how they are so different.

Can you sprinkle chick starter on top of the eggs?

They both got baths (didn't need to use soap) and got snuggled in a towel while I cleared out the incubator and put a clean hatching tray in there with shelf liner for them. They're starting to fluff up, and the healthier baby is feeling so much better she jumped out of the hatching tray and is running around in there! I'm so glad I decided to clean them off. I'm hopeful that "Anastasia"(hoping she'll 'resurrect' lol) starts feeling stronger too. I'm gonna give her a couple drops of nutridrench in a few and see if that maybe gives her a bit more strength. Fingers crossed she improves as much as the other baby has!

I spent a lot of time sorting out who’s who amongst my Hoover’s chipmunk chicks. With 8 of them similarly colored to each other and the Legbar chicks I couldn’t keep them straight.

Between comb type, leg color, how they’re feathering out, a couple leg bands I can now identify 8 from each other. The last two I’m calling “the twins”. They’d need to be standing perfectly still right next to each other to tell any differences. Not much chance of that happening. 🤣 1FDCD52A-FFA4-4A33-BB37-8205E6E87FA5.jpeg

So cute, so similar.

Excellent news, great job.

I am on the Aug 22 hatch bc hatch day was supposed to be 8/1 (7/31 at the earliest) but starting yesterday we had one starting to make it's appearance but this morning there were 2 open shells. Mama has them pretty much under wraps so no chick pics yet! One was an egg I was questionable on too!
