July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

UT- I hear you can request "no crested breeds", but I didn't want to do that because I would have liked spitzenhaubens.
Good to know you can be opted out of crested. No plans to place an order anytime soon. But I might soften when our “babies” have grown out fully. 🤣

I do plan on a February order from Freedom Ranger hatchery for New Hampshires. There are some very intriguing threads on that line of birds in the BYC Meat section. They might actually be the dual purpose birds I’d given up on finding. That would be pretty cool to find.

They always send a polish in the rare assortment. I am always hoping for something extra special behind curtain number 2. Although I did get a banded blue orpington recently in the adopt me section.

Below are what I ordered 3 Speckled Sussex, and 2 rare, one Ancona and one, Surprise polish. (I have polish and anacona in my last shipment, now I have more...yeah.)

So floofy and sweet lil chipmunks!!!

I have had New hamp's before. I am not a red bird fan myself- (SS are more burgandy). Also my first hens I had were australorps, and one was top hen. She had a aussy hench hen. About 7 years in the hench hen died, and the NH waiting in the wings stepped up and was grooming the head Aussy hen telling her how she was going to be her hench, blah, blahblah. Then one day the head hen aussy wasn't feeling herself and lost the head hen position, and the NH dropped her like a hot potato and sucked up to some other hen. I felt bad for the Aussy.

I put together an outside pen and was going to move the babies, and when they were all in a box I wanted to get a pic of the "beeball".

How's everybody's babies from July hatch doin?
Here are the three i kept...all had vaulted skulls.
1 paint Satin - meet Perdy,
1 splash Silkie - meet Candy
and
1 either dark blue/black Silkie - meet Bambi
Sure hoping they are all girls...but the way the paint has been acting with my new bantam cochin idk!
They’re beautiful! All pullets would be excellent. 🤞

From the July HAL chicks I have 4 Legbars (3 pullets,1 rooster) and 2 Silverudd’s (1 pullet, 1 rooster) remaining.

Then the 10 Hoover’s chicks with the same hatch date. At 5 weeks I believe 2 are Olive eggers. The rest, I think, are Easter Eggers. Possibly some Prairie Bluebells or Starlight Green Eggers. The plan is to keep them all till they start laying. Then I’ll choose keepers based on egg color.

Our favorites are a black Silverudd’s rooster and a buff colored Easter Egger. Both are very sweet and calm. They are the kind of birds you can walk over when they’re free ranging.
