July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Candled the new eggs today, which are on Day 3 now. Could definitely see veins in 6/10 lavenders, and am pretty sure I saw growth in 5/10 marans. Still early, so I'm hoping there's more fertile than just what I saw today, and those marans eggs are darn near impossible to see thru. I have high hopes for them though, especially since they all seem to be in much better shape than the others were when they shipped. Went ahead and checked the others too while I was at it...all 17 of the other Ams are still going strong on Day 12! Let's hope it stays that way and I'm able to get the rest of them at least to lockdown. I don't wanna lose anymore.
Glad they are doing good. We are over halfway there!!!

Can I set eggs on the 17th (when my new incubator arrives) but share within this group? I also have three eggs under a broody hen due to hatch on the 20th. here's a photo of one tonight on day 10. we could see movement!

I can't speak for everyone, but I say the more, the merrier! Any excuse to see more fluff butts!!!❤

All the fingers crossed for a more successful shipment 🤞🏼

Eggtopsied the two BCM eggs that were obviously goners at full dark. It’s always so fascinating!!! Down to one BCM (it’s wiggling!), a Sapphire Spash (pretty confident she laid it), and 3 EEs. TSC didn’t have chicks today and isn’t done for the season, but I think I’ll pick out some eggs for her from tomorrows gathering

It seems to be a little easier to see the embryos in the plastic bag, but I do my eggtopsies in a section of the woods behind the house that I've started mentally calling "the graveyard of lost chicks."

By giving the quitters and DIS chicks to the wild animals I feel that they're not entirely waster.

We’re in the middle of town and so far no issues with predators, but I’ve considered giving them to the dog or crows. I’ve accidentally left out a stray egg or so that manage to vanish overnight. Love the idea of giving back to nature!

Doing it in town probably wouldn't work like leaving them in my back acre of woods does. I leave them far enough down the hill to not attract predators near my coop.
