July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Were they refrigerated? Pullet eggs?
These conditions can play a role. The chicks may be malpositioned. Just keep a close eye on them. They often hatch just fine. 😊
The hens they are from are all almost a year old, but the silkies have only been laying for a few months. They weren't refrigerated or anything, stored on the counter for just a couple days before going in the incubator.

I feel a bit stupid now, but what's a crop?

@Gammas Bearded Babies , are your chickens indoors, or do you have a coop outside?
Crop, from what I understand, is where their food goes to be processed before going to the tummy...my expert definition lol.
My babies stay inside for couple weeks then to outdoor brooder inside run with others.

Oh, got it. Where is the crop located?

I have 12 Dominique eggs that I picked up locally from a breeder / shower here in Kansas. Got them going in the incubator at midnight on the 5th. Hatch date is the 26th. I candled on day 5, and 11 out of 12 were fertile, and growing!

Always such an exciting time. This is my first time with Dominique’s, and I can’t wait to have a flock of them! An endangered, truly American breed, with such a rich history.
