July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
That cracked egg looks bad. Usually, depending on the crack, if you drop before day 10, don't bother, it will rot and wreck the hatch... if after day ten, if you put on nail polish, or wax, then maybe, but an egg cracked that bad, I would say no.
Got it. This day 15 or so. Any thoughts on the air cell and blood clot?

I used to have a penpal from Ozark when I was a child (many years ago now 😄).

I'm doing La Bresse as well! Have you hatched them before? I've read they can be trickier than other breeds but I'm not sure how true that is?
Small world! I loved the penpal days and still have the letters from my penpal. Sadly, hardly no one writes letters anymore. 🙁

This will be my first go around with the Bresse so I'm looking forward to them, though I can't imagine they would be harder to raise than any other barnyard fowl. I've hatched/raised numerous breeds of heritage chickens over the years as well as guineas, ducks, geese, turkeys, emu (which I won't do again!) and quail...and I have plans to add peafowl, pheasant, partridge, and maybe swans to my repertoire. 😁

Ok slowing down a bit now that DH tested positive to the c....d...and I have symptoms but negative still.
So thought I'd do this before they get any bigger and while they had full crops!View attachment 3182261
Sorry to hear that. 😧 Hoping/praying that y'all make a speedy and full recovery. It made the rounds twice so far in our house. 2nd wasn't as bad as the first, and the first wasn't bad in the grand scheme of things as we've had worse flu before. But tragically we lost hubs dad and more than one friend due to the c. I'd like to think we have a better immune system thanks in part to a country lifestyle that includes mucking out coops and stalls and such.

Day 15 and most are filling up most of the egg.... Is it early for that?

Adding a couple pics.... One of them I am not sure if it will make it.

How was it candling the Marans? I’m bummed about another silver down. You were excited about those.
I’ve noticed a few times how varying breeds or breeding groups from the same seller ship, and incubate, differently from each other. One of the many nuances of shipped eggs. Best I can figure is some eggs are just tougher, or better suited for shipping, than others from the second they hit the nesting box.
The Marans really aren't too bad. Could see thru most of them, and the ones I couldn't really see thru will be easy enough to see real growth once the babies are bigger so I'm not too concerned. I'm bummed about the Silver too. They were the ones I was most excited about because I've never had them, and now being down to only 4, I'm not super optimistic I'll end up with a boy and a girl, or that any will hatch at all. I really hope so. May have to get a few more of them to hatch out just to have a better selection of grow outs. Idk. At this point, I'll just be happy to get one male and one female.

Fingers crossed the rest make it to hatch day!!!!

I do so hope they make it!!! 🤞🤞🤞🤞

None of the Marans or Legbar eggs I received last month hatched. But then, they sat at a terminal mid point for two days before moving on and were finally delivered to the house in a dented box...after receiving strict instructions to keep at the local office where I would pick up, vs bouncing all over our pot hole riddled countryside. The "hold" instructions with my phone number were in thick 2" high lettering on the outside of the box right near the address label they couldn't miss it. The eggs were all pretty scrambled by the time they arrived, so I wasn't surprised when none hatched. No fun dropping $160 without getting so much as a single chick. I don't blame the seller as she did all she could to ensure their safe arrival, but in saying that, I won't buy from anyone else who insists on using FedEx. I've not had a problem with USPS, even back when they had all their shortages...but FedEx is another story all together.

This one doesn’t look like it’s developed as much as it should be at DAY 15.
I stopped turning my next set of eggs here last Sunday on day 16 as I was going to be gone for three days. One of them looked really under developed and not quite right thought it was still moving. I elected to remove it and not risk it exploding while I was gone. I’ve seen this before and they have never made it in my experience. I felt bad taking it out of the incubator when it was still alive but I felt I really didn’t have a choice under the circumstances.
I would recommend hanging onto this one until day 18 at lock down and then reevaluating it then.🙂
