I'm so sorry. Fortunately both of mine are healthy now and putting around, but there was so much blood... I wish I'd had some of that powder stuff that people use! I certainly learned my lesson.Unfortunately…been there, done that.It was a hard lesson I still remember well. Even years later.
I only had 5 hatched this time so right now I'm planning on building a stock first then next year I'll make a coop with run for them to play in.She wasn't very nice. Thanks though. Her name was Quigley and the roo Cora (we could tell them apart, but not gender). Now Cora is Mr. Marston. I figured... Don't know if you saw, but I dropped a guinea egg in this thread. Any chicken shell would have been demolished. The membranes must be pretty tough.
Got it. I've become interested in quail for meat. Do you keep them in super small separate enclosurs, or in like a real coop and let them free range, or what?
@FreedomFarm13 , I'm so sorry about your silvers! I do hope you get a male and female!
I made a huge mistake last night, I assissted too early. The mutt and the W-dotte. Lots of blood, too much. Both are miraculously alive and hatched. I'll take them out shortly. Last night an Isbar and a Copper Maran pipped and hatched. Don't know which is which, they're under my puffed up three week old. Current pip chart: 2 marans, the legbar, the Swedish Flower, 1 Pita Pinta, the Deathlayer. Just w
How big is your coop going to be?I only had 5 hatched this time so right now I'm planning on building a stock first then next year I'll make a coop with run for them to play in.
I have a quail coop that has two sections. I haven't decided how I'm gonna use them yet depending on how many female I get I supposed
He's doing wonderfully, thank you so much! *Lot's* of love! He was even nibbling a bit earlier. He has tons of friends two. My three week olds are loving the who batch of newbies and literally acting like parents, and several more chicks hatched. Here's the current count:@Dragon Slayer Trinket how is Anton doing? It sounds like he's getting lots of love and everything else you can do for him. I hope he keeps improving.
@FreedomFarm13 my fingers are crossed for your little one as well.
I'm on day 13 and I'm down another egg now. I noticed a smell so I sniffed all of them to find the bad one. I'm glad I caught it in time! That's 3 eggs so far gone out of 21 - one rotten, one early quitter and one empty. I'll be candling and weighing tomorrow and I'm hoping the other 18 are still going strong.
Do any of you weigh your eggs to check if they're on track? I had been calculating my target weights based on 13% loss by hatch on day 21 but I've just read something there that said it should be 13% loss by day 18/19. Any idea which is right?
You can use cornstarch for bleeding. Future reference."Decide to join"... I love that!

Thank you. She's still alive. The baby with the swollen eye and the last one to hatch are still in the bator to keep her company. She's slowly absorbing veins and yolk I think (seeing the chewing motion a lot), and will hopefully hatch without issue on her own when she's ready. The 11 in the brooder are doing great, all fluffed up and sweet as can be! This has been a stressful hatch, and I've got 14 more due in 8 days, so I'll be a nervous wreck all over again, lol.@Dragon Slayer Trinket how is Anton doing?
