***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

GVEA picked today to change the transformer behind my house, so I covered the incubator with a Towel, and in 40 mins, they were done.....

There are 9 empty shells in the incubator, and 6 pips....Hope they continue!

Well part one of my hatch is done 1 SPR from 3,6 GCMarans from 7 looks like only 1 roo pretty lucky and 2 Ameracaunas from 4 (one blue and one black) part 2 is 2 Blue Coppers and I left 1 of the Ameracauna eggs in there but I don't think anything will happen. Last night one of the blues was rolling pretty good and they shouldn't hatch until Monday....Sunday I lock down my New Hampshires so far I have 15 left from 22 and all of my SPR's from Wynette 19 looked good at first candling. This has been a wonderful chicken week my CMarans started laying @ 20 weeks now I'm waiting on my Partridge Rocks and Delawares they are all the same age.

I have my chicks in a brooder (under heat lamp) in the kitchen with a tiny chick waterer. Someone (I suspect turkey) managed to tip it over during the night and when I got up everyone was LYING DOWN in cold water. Needless to say, I wasn't able to save them all.

Both pheasants and both brahmas perished, along with a turkey poult and some new hampshires.
Last time I ever give little ones a full waterer.

Great pics of your broody hens & their chicks. But....... I thought for sure after hatching in those bunny cages, they'd have long floppy ears & cotton tails. They're adorable anyway! Congrats!

Hmmm, anybody see a resemblance?

Well the hatch is now over. Out of 53 eggs from two different breeders, I have 22 live cheepies. We are still trying to figure out the identities of a couple of the chicks.

Some of the chicks are in the brooder, much to my daughter's delight. I left at least 2 chicks with each hen. The girls are absolutely inhaling the chick starter! In appreciation for their amazingly heroic efforts (all sat for at least 50 days, one at least 58), I sang them all a rousing rendition of "The Broody Song" https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=367575 The hens all sat there calmly, acting like they thought it no more than their due, but the rabbits looked at me like they thought I was crazy. I thought I heard one rabbit doe muttering something about, "when do we get an anthem?" She had a point; of the 5 bunnies in her nest box, only one is hers. The others came from 3 other does (not a good round of kindling!)

OK I had such bad luck last month and in May I didn't post for July.

BUT!!!!!

Out of my shipped eggs I had mostly broken aircells and the 2 that did develop stopped around day 12 from what I figured out.
Out of eggs from my girls???? I only had 5 to put in at the same time. Two non fertile, one quiter and 2 little EEs from my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana X BR.

I know that's not much, but heck I got a hatch!

The 2 Silkie eggs I was just hoping would take, but the roo hadn't been in for more than 2 days, and I have a new roo over them now.

I bought a small flock of Bev Davis FBCMs that are older, so not laying a whole lot of eggs. They sure can put away the feed though! They're HUGE!

My first eggs from them are due to hatch and I hope they are still young enough so I have some fertile eggs.

Hatch date is the 14th. Wish me luck cause I have more due the 22nd and the 28th.

Need this my new flock of FBCMs badly!

Please send good hatching vibes.

Here we go! So far there are about 5 or 6 pips. Will it be better to turn the lights off in their room, or can I leave them on? Come on little critters!!!

Wolftracks I was wondering how you were...I have New Hampshires due the same day so I'll send you some good hatching vibes I had only 1 hatch out of 20 there must be a package shaker when our eggs enter CA mine all had bad air cells but I did get a good shipment from Wynette so maybe most of those will hatch SPR's due the 25th I wasn't going to do any more but I couldn't help myself I've been trying for 2 months to get a hatch of them 2 chicks is all that's made it.

Yeah I had to take away the big-chick waterer from the ducks because they were actually getting into it to splash around. I gave them a little QUAIL waterer, and they STILL managed to make a mess. I watched them for a little bit and they were picking up beaks of food and walking it to the water and then playing 'filter for food!' in the waterer lip, draining the entire thing into their brooder. Sigh.

But they are doing MUCH better since I moved them into the rabbit cage and gave them a tupperware they can't splash water out of. They even figured out the Into and Out of ramps in less than an hour.

I honestly have no real idea what breed they are. They are eggs from a mixed pen of Pekin, Rouen, Runner, and a muscovy (but I'm sure they don't have any muscovy in them, those smaller eggs are still in the bator getting ready to hatch and none of these have the dark bills or eye lines)). My best guess for the moment is Rouen/Pekin mixes since there's so little black on them.
