I’m not sure what ones I have so far. I’ll wait until they feather out. I only need females to add to my aviary (these are the quail that are safe and lay eggs for offspring) I will be making another safe pen where I’ll put the albino and the other colors I like. Then use their eggs for offspring for meat and chicks. I won’t be using the albino for offspring. I don’t want that gene to be passed on!

My broody is still keeping her secrets, but we have at least one ccl cock, and a darker chick, but I can't tell as yet if the latter's one of the marans or a wellie cross (too little seen too briefly)... more to follow
I think it is awesome that you are letting her be and respecting her protective nature. I hope that I can do the same if a ever "suffer the broody curse". 😁

Broody kicked an egg out!!

I only have 2 hens, so haven’t separated them in hopes that they’ll raise the chicks together. the non broody one (until today) has been laying her eggs in a different nest box. But today must have decided to lay in broody’s nest. 🤦‍♀️

so when my broody pushed the infertile egg out, she also pushed out another light coloured egg (most of them are dark welsummer eggs).

it was cold to the touch when I went out to check, but candled and I think I saw some slight movement. It looks to be developed as far as it should be for today (day 16) and veins and everything still in tact.

I’ve put it in the incubator, because i didn’t want to disturb mom again, and also want to keep an eye on it. How long should I wait before checking it again?

so annoyed with my non-broody. Why couldn’t she just mind her own business? Lol
My experience with broodies this year has led me to believe that, like humans, not all know what they're doing. Sometimes it may just be an accident, too, while moving around to knock one out.

I'm going to be nervous about broodies for a while after my first time broody chicken managed to get her eggs to hatch day and threw one egg out right before it was ready to hatch and killed another one when it did successfully hatch.

Over the years I've seen a lot of things happen to perfectly good viable eggs that were just broody accidents. One year a first timer duck freaked out when the egg under her started moving, peeping, and pipping and she kicked it across the barn on a night when it was 45 degrees out. The eggs was very cold when I found it!
I took it in, warmed it up, helped it through hatching (because it was already started) and got a perfectly healthy duckling that grew up to raise her own babies just fine.

My ducks did this. We were not at home and were watching them on the camera and I so wish I had the video. The look of first time mom "omg, omg, omg" and the pacing back and forth staring in horror.... it was hilarious and also led us to rush home. haha

hey’re in with the little handicapped Legbar, who, by the way has made leaps and bounds in her recovery from the slipped tendon/splay leg/whatever else was going on with her situation. Lol. She moves about as gracefully (gracelessly) as the 2 newbies. :lau Definitely appreciates the little bit of extra freedom being out of the chair or cup though.

How does the chair work? My guinea has been in pipe cleaner braces and briefly in a cup, which he managed to jump out of at 2 days old - lol - since day one and is not recovering. Any tips?

so she's finally left the nest and taken the chicks to food and water, and 5 out of 6 purchased eggs, all 3 Marans and 2 out of 3 CCL, are still there, unhatched. So she has under her the single shipped ccl that hatched, and both home grown SFH x Welsummers that I added to the clutch when I set it. Very disappointing 😞

Do you have a incubator and candler?

Check them and see if there’s movement. If there is stick them in the incubator.

About the skywalker bieles... they were my first bieles also. He is a great packer, for sure! And shipped right away. My caution would be to keep an eye on those bieles in the heat though. I lost one in the first really hot spell this summer that I'm not sure if she was ever quite right, but can only think it was the heat as the remaining members of that flock are visibly umimpressed by the hot weather we've been having. They look how I feel about the heat and that is kind of droopy and uninterested in being outside. They also needed more water than they were getting from the nipple waterers and I put a pan of water out for them, but they still seem to suffer in the heat.

Yes they’re going to be raised cages. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do.
I don't have quail but I do follow a guy on youtube that has great videos for building the cages. Check out Coturnix Corner on YouTube. I know that a lot of people have followed his build instructions. I based my DYI incubator off of his design. His is smaller than mine and set up for incubating quail but that's no matter. The point is that his instructional video was detailed enough that even a complete nube like me could not only duplicate it but modify it and make it still work. He has some good ideas.
