My husband and I tried to figure out what could have gone wrong, and nothing looks off. The temp alarm did go off, my phone was on it’s charger when the temp started to go up. I checked on the unit last at 2:30 this afternoon. All was fine. The temperature started rising at 7:30. By 11 pm when I checked it before going to bed, it had reached 118*, and the water cap I have in it was dry as a bone. The set temp hasn’t been touched, it still reads that it’s set for 100.5.
I guess I need to contact the place I bought it from and see what they say. All we can figure out is that the thermostat went out or something.
8 perfectly viable Salmon Faverolles are now dead. I am just sick.
I'm so sorry to hear this! I've heard good things about the Hovabators from some and other say they have this issue with the still air styrofoam bators. I hope the manufacturer will have some wisdom to share. Did you candle the eggs anyway? I've heard of a few times where the temp went up on the outside, but inside the egg was still ok in some of the eggs... maybe near the outside where it's cooler. I'm very sorry this happened! :hugs

Well, I am beyond angry.
My Hova Bator got my Salmon FAvorelle eggs all the way up to 114 degrees. I have an alarm on my phone from the calibrated thermometer/humidor, but it gives a tone like my news feed that I don't check or hear all the time. But with the damn thing set to just 100.5, why on earth did it keep heating up? I checked it late this morning, put water in it and the humidity and everything else was just fine....as it has been for almost 2 stinking weeks. Now all those eggs, which were doing well, are toast.
I feel like ripping the stupid Styrofoam piece of crap to shreds. The heater shouldn't be turning itself on if the temp goes over 100.
I am so mad I could spit nails.
It's not from sun or anything else. Sunlight never reaches the sideboard I have it sitting on.
I'm so so sorry to hear this! I've been so excited to see your babies hatch! :hugs

Also, I gave my broody ducks

Yep! Welcome!

What are you hatching? :)
Okay, thanks! I'm really excited!

I'm hatching chicks. Their father is a Dominique, and I'm wondering if any of them will have color or if they will all be black/white/grey and barred. I know they'll be barred, but I could wish for barring with some other color, like barred buff. As it is, the color seems to get washed out which is not very interesting.

4 eggs from GSL
2 eggs from BO
2 eggs from PB (Production Blue)
1 egg from NN
1 egg from EE
1 egg from BA
1 mystery egg (I think it's naked neck)

That's my list!

Had 1 blue silkie hatch before I went to bed last night.

Woke up to 3 more hatched 2 more blues and a buff.

1 more left to hatch - candled and it is still moving. Hoping for a black one.

Time to lock down! Got up early... candled everything... weighed everything... took pictures and did a little happy dance! When I candled on day seven it looked like I had fewer viable than when I candled today so yeah for not tossing anything too soon!
Here's what made it to lock-down;

Bielefelders 11 of 14
Cream Legbar 12 of 15
Black Copper Maran 6 of 18 (three of them are questionable)

Now I just need to sit on my hands and wait! :pop Oh... and cross my fingers, :fl say some prayers,🙏 do things to keep me distracted... :bun:wee:celebrate

Put in another celadon egg and regular quail egg! I’m so excited for these to hatch. So far I have 4 eggs from my homegrowns in the bator.

Quail and turkens hatch on Sunday 😁 need to pick up some storage bins to make into brooders. Need at least 3 then I’ll add some wire to the top.

Nice! I can't say on the Dominique. My bielefelder fathered a hatch this spring that was crossed with olive egger, BLRW, buff orpingtons, cochin, and others and I got some dark barring in about 95% of his offspring. Most are black and dark brown and there is some rust and yellow in some of them but a good number of them look almost like barred rocks.

The same thing happened to someone else with a different brand of bator. Two in fact, side by side in the same room and both spiked at the same time enough to kill most of the eggs. Nothing seemed wrong and he could not figure out the reason either.
Wonder if maybe there was an electricity spike or something like that?
