July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

Our broody had one more chick. We looked last night and one was pipped. We could hear it pecking at the shell - and this morning we have a new chick.

We also are picking up our Meyer's order from the post office - a polish and three salmon favorelles.

So far we have three hatched over the last week and change. 8 more eggs under the broody. All looked to be developing as of last week.

Is this normal to have a hatch last over a week?

Sounds like other eggs were laid and it created a staggered hatch. She may jump off the nest after a while to take care of the chicks that have hatched.

Yeah, she spends a lot of the day with the peeps, but it is warm here, so they still reach incubation temperature. I don't expect all of the eggs to hatch, but am happy when they do. This is a bonus hatch - we didn't expect to do another hatch, but Summer decided she needed to hatch some.

Have you gotten any detains on how they will do it yet? Not a thing here.

We are supposed to start Aug 19th. But we are just now starting to see COVID cases in the area (had made it until about 2 weeks ago and then we got 3 in town and a few in the county north of us....now, of course, there are more). So it will be interesting to see if we start on time. Online schooling was a joke this last spring (Basically check in with teachers once a week to play a game, chat, or review something they already learned and it was not mandatory. Out of my daughters class of almost 70, only like 5-10 kids ever popped into these sessions). So hoping if they have to start on that route, that it is more structured and the kids actually learn something.

We are up to like 2500 cases around and rising fast. Have no idea if they will try the A/B in person schedule or opt at the last minute to go all online. It's just chaos here.

My pheasant run. Just need to tie the last 2 sections of chicken wire down, cut lengths of hog wire for a skirt, install the electric fence, and put on the tarp.

(My DH is 5th generation of his family to live on the old farmstead - the old dugout was just north west of the old farmhouse, the soddy was just west of it, and the old farmhouse was built around 1917 and added on to 3 times. This was more than likely his aunts doll that she lost or forgot under the mulberry tree.)

I know how that goes. We had 4 broodies at one time. Then one went broody again then another one went broody. So we have two broodies now.

I love chicks so I’m not complaining! Plus it’s easier if they care for them and not me. It makes my life easier since I have quail chicks to tend to now.

Yes we talked to the school principle. The students will use their chrome books and it will be just like school but on the computer. They will start at normal time and end at the normal time. They will have a break for lunch where the parents can make them a lunch then they will be back learning.

Right now mine are finishing a bag I had of purina 18% starter then will switch over to the Dumor 20%.
How are their personalities? Mine seem rather skittish. I was thinking they would be more mellow than they are. The boys are decent, but the girls are ditzes.

I use Purina flock raiser for everyone, it makes my life more simple. The only ones who don’t get it are the quail. They get game bird feed.

My MM order came in this morning.

Out of 33 ordered chicks, 34 made it home healthy and alive. Only lost one partridge rock hen in shipping.

I got 2 bonus chicks. One bonus Creve and one (I think) Cochin. It has feathered legs, five toes and yellow shanks. Also standard size.

Maybe I can get some pics up later. Morning chore time now that the fluffy butts have everything they need and are stabilized.
