June 2023 Hatch-a-long

I need to do the same. I had one chick killed this year, the nest box I had mom in was a plastic one a bit smaller than my normal ones and think she stepped on it.
Right now, I have broodies in the two coops. I don't want to move any of them as ducks can be very picky about that. Or else I'd put all of them in the same coop, and put the others in the second one. Right now one is for the regular ducks, and the other for the Muscovy.

I am still building my 2nd coop. So I have 2 broodys, that are nasty!, Taking up 2 nest boxes and a mama and babies that have moved to a corner. About 2 weeks ago I had 3 broodies and a mama but thankfully 1 broke. And with the mama and babies, and extra babies in the coop I don't have room for my crate to break them. Ugh.

Yeah, I lost a few fingers checking one of the nests today! :lau

I put on a sweatshirt and wear winter gloves and one still hurts. But she bites and holds on and shakes her head like a dog!!! She doesn't just peck. She is one of my smaller girls too AND "not known to go broody". This is her 3rd maybe 4th time since Nov!!!

I'm not happy today. This morning, I found two ducklings dead and one in bad shape. Subsequently lost that one. When I checked shortly after, two more dead. So in a matter of hours, I lost five ducklings. Of course, they were all my blue ducklings.

I brought the two survivors inside, and they are with the ones that just hatched. BTW, up to six, one pipped still in the incubator, and two internal pips I think.

This is partially my own fault for not having a secure area for the babies to sleep, although since most of the deaths occurred in the nest box (a very large storage bin with a hole in the side) I think they were trampled by Momma.

At least I have the new ones, but I'm still really miffed.

Omg I'm so sorry Wind :hugs

11 of the original 12 eggs are developing, the 1 was a quitter I found on day 10. I now have 4 polish, 4 silkie, and 3 serama. The one that quit was a silkie.
***note***
I used a phone light as the one candler i have sucks and the phone light works better. 😪.

I'm back again on new updates of new babies. The babies under my white mandarin duck hen hatched this morning, and my shipment of baby chicks came in this morning as well! 3 partridge silkies, 5 buff silkies, 2 black silkies, 1 blue silkie, 1 red silkie, 3 red frizzle cochins, 3 silver sebrights, and 2 golden neck duccles. The chicks came a day early and I was NOT ready so their brooder is pretty rushed.

Wasn’t expecting anything to hatch until the 14th (which I’d thought was day 26=“early hatch” for guineas), but two keets were out of shell a day prior; neither survived.

After adjusting security in the coop, I found two more eggs today that had begun pipping: now to see if foster broody Melba can hatch them out & take care of them.
If not, I’ll lean more strongly toward the incubator-brooder approach for next round of keets. :hmm
