June Hatch a Long

Can i sex them with their feathers
. No I don't think you can as feather sexing requires a specific cross of a fast and slow feathering bird so I think you are out of luck as the hens you hatched from were a cross to began with you will just have to wait and see how the develop you will know at about three months for sure

Ok I have to complain... Not that I want to but I am grrr at a fellow employee. Just received my next batch of shipped eggs and went to pick them up from the main building. The lady that was working there picked up the box and gently shook it and said 'is it really eggs?'
OMG!!!! Yes!!!! I said don't do that and she laughed did it again and said is it really? I again said yes i am hatching them and they are an investment!

Grrrrrr.
Ok done ranting.

Update on my babies; have 2 more silkie chicks. One hatched under momma and man is momma protective!
The crunchy SF died last night. Don't know why. So that leaves me with 2 AMs, 4 silkies, and 1 SF. Hmm... Now I have 24 AM going in bator tomorrow. 2 broody hens still sitting and AMs and Orps in bator now.
And DH having issues with surgery site!! Ugh!
Oh Sorry I said I was done complaining.

What was the humidity in the room the eggs were incubated in? This plays a big part in this as well. Sounds like you might want to run a dehumidifier in the room or run the A/C to lower the room humidity.
40-50% normally. No spikes despite the rainy weather - we keep the house pretty cool and stable. I'm going to start a test batch of eggs from my own flock this Friday and add ZERO water the first 18 days. If they still look like they drowned then, I'm just going to quit hatching. I shouldn't have to run a dehumidifier where I live.
I would almost wait until day 25 if there was a fully formed chick inside the first one you opened. Sometimes nature's timeline just doesn't align with ours. Several of my chicks on the last set hatched at day 24.
All the ones I opened were dead already - no internal pip so no breathing, no heart beat, no response to stimuli.
I have a question for anyone who owns a GQF genesis with the digital display.
Is it NORMAL for the temp/humidity display to get condensation in it during the hatch? I couldn't even read it because there were so many water droplets in there. The display window was almost clear of condensation though.
I get a little around the power cord hole and the very edges where the window meets the styrofoam after lockdown, but none in the LCD display. Not sure what normal is since I've only used it twice.

Hi everyone! As my two barred rocks are starting to feather out I think that I have a rooster. His feathers are much whiter then the other one's, his legs don't have as much black on them, and his comb is bigger and brighter.

This is Miss Kay. I think that she is a pullet.

This is Phil. I think that he is a rooster. What do you guys think? I am not worried about it, I just was curious.

Its ok dear, you just need a hug. And yes I will come slap your co-worker. No thanks needed.....lol See I would have smacked her after the 1st shake, then there wouldnt be a 2nd shake.....lol

I have my first pipped duck egg!!!!! AHHH

Congrats! Ducklings are so adorable! I would try some if I could figure out what to do with them, but then again the DH is a bit blown away by my chicken fixation, so maybe I shouldn't poke the bear :D. Good luck on the hatch!

I had the same problem with my first two hatches. I believe the thermometer that came with the bator was off.  On the third attempt I got two new thermometers and 7 out of 9 chicks hatched!  Yay.  Now I have 7 babies a week old, 2 chickens that are 4 weeks old and 2 that are 8 weeks. Done hatching for the summer - now I have to figure out what works well in the coop, researching an automatic water-er. Can't stand their water being so dirty! My husband thinks I am crazy....but oh well, it isn't the first time he's thought that.  Good luck to you in your hatch!

I ordered some nipples online and converted a 5 gal home depot bucket into a waterer for the same reason. My four hens never empty it... I empty it once a week to rinse it out and refresh the water. My next move is to put a pipe elbow into it near the top so I can fill it from outside the coop! They learned how to drink from the nipples in just a couple hours. Made a different style for my pullet pen, with pipe-saddle style nipples. The bucket is outside the pen (easy to fill) and the pipe extends through the fence into the pen. Again, they were drinking from it in less than a day.
