JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Thanks y'all. I have her in a dark spot in my house. I have some save a chick, will that be good? She is trying to stand up now so maybe she will be OK. When I found her I thought she was dead because she wasn't moving and limp. I picked her up so the dogs wouldn't eat her. I put her on a table outside so I could bury her. When I went out about 30 minutes latter she was picking her head up. I was in a little shock myself seeing her alive.

I hope it all turns out well so that I can say I love that story. Poor thing, poor you, sorry for the roller coaster today.

Yes I would put the save a chick in her water.

My Orpington that was dropped by the hawk had visible wounds, he had her by two claws, one near her head and one near her rump. She still can see out of one eye but it’s always squinted and I can tell there’s some loss of vision.

The rear wound she lost two large patches of skin but healed in a week! A year later, She still doesn’t jump too well and won’t roost with the other chickens, she goes underneath them, but she is going strong and my most reliable layer.

Chickens can persevere. :fl:fl:fl

my beloved singleton, Patience passed away last sat. She was alive and well at home fri PM. we watched tv together, I put her in her night time box and in the morning she wasn't singing to me. I sent her to UC davis for necropsy and will get a short version report today or tomorrow and a detailed one next week. She was so healthy and happy looking friday. I took a ton of chick supermodel pics. she was super special to me and I spent all but 6 hours of her 3 week life with her. I hope everyone else still has their june hatchlings! Now I want some new babies, but am in the quarantine zone so can't get any. I won't incubate again, it was too stressful for me. I had 1 of 6 hatch. of the 5 not hatched 1 was small, the other 4 too big for their shells and at full term, never got their heads turned to the air sac which was there. My breeder friend from back east told me they were too big for their shells from the pics I sent opening up unhatched ones.

Oh no!!! I am so sorry you lost your solo hatching miracle baby! Hugs to you.

I hope this situation passes super quickly and the quarantine is lifted. :hugs

Nothing to add over other comments about keeping her quiet for a bit. Lukewarm liquids, especially electrolytes, would be good if she’d drink them. Hoping for a full recovery!!!:fl

Well I wrote state vet and they are allowing some movement of birds with permits. Deciding if I want to wait it out until the quarantine is lifted or if I want to go through permit process and get some babies from a breeder friend back east. No one really wants the government "all up in their kool-aid" as my young niece would say, so maybe it's preferable to wait it out. but, I do want some chicks or pullets. None will be my special singleton, but still I want some.

Final guinea hatch update: the last keet just hatched! :wee Pics of last keet below. I’m amazed that these late hatching keets did so well when so much of their incubation was far from ideal with respect to humidity, turning, and nonhygenic incubator and nest conditions! Final tallies:
Hatch 1: 12 eggs taken from periphery of nest. 4 clear, 2 quitters, 6 hatched at 24-26 days of incubation, so 75% hatch rate.
Hatch 2: 129 eggs/ dead keets recovered from nest in pic below. 66 were developing and placed in incubator. 50 hatched. Remaining 16 were dead in shell, malpositioned, or the one that couldn’t cut the dried out egg membrane. So I’ll say that 50/66 hatched, again for 75% hatch rate.

One days old keet was later found dead in brooder and there has been some pasty butt, but keets are growing and doing well overall! I’m so impressed at how tough these keets were to endure such a rough start!!

It’s been a wild hatching month for me, and I appreciate the considerable support I’ve gotten from you all! :hugs You rock!!! :celebrate We may hatch again in fall, trying again for the dark laying BCM, but if so it won’t be for a month or two. To those of you with August hatches, best of luck!!!

It has been incredible watching your guinea rescue hatching adventure. The good and the bad, your management of the situation has been better than could be expected than any of us! Bravo to you and congratulations on so many beautiful keets!!!
