JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

I got a spot. I was super concerned that that big vessel would be bothered by the beak but I just sat here thinking it clearly has tried to pip, I need to help it or it’s a goner.

I’m hoping it just looks worse. He is breathing now, still chewing, and made a chirp so fingers crossed!

With every other egg pipped, should I open the air cell of the last (largest saddle I have) egg to see what’s happening or how long do I wait when it hasn’t internally pipped?

If it's the last egg, then I would probably do a little investigating since you've already encountered troubles with this hatch. I base a lot of my assists on how many chicks have already hatched and how many issues have been encountered. If that makes sense.

success so far!

I pierced a little vessel helping out one of the chicks this morning, which was a good thing for me. I am moving so slowly that I was able to catch it, pressure it and stop the bleeding immediately. It actually made me breathe easier with this one here just telling myself to move slowly.

It sounds like some exciting progress! I agree that I think a lot of your issues are definitely due to shipping. It's the primary factor that I have zero experience with. If you have anything local that you want to hatch it may be a good idea to do a hatch just to see what happens without the shipping factor and also clarify if it's something with the incubator or just from rough handling.

The membrane drying to them is often from too low of humidity. So you may have a combo situation where the jostling from shipment seems to increase chances of fluid pockets and in this case, sticky chicks. This is all based on an assumption though.

I second @Mixed flock enthusiast on puncturing a small hole in the membrane where you see the beak and no veins.

I was thinking that. Predisposed to fluid pockets or poor development. So my shrink wrapped chicks were probably the BEST chicks to hatch, and in general I should increase my humidity. I agree. I'll try something with local eggs to check humidity and what not. Thinking back on the ducks, while some silver apple yards pipped on the bottom, they didn't need up actually needing assisting, even though I checked air cells to see when I would need to. They still popped out on their own without issues. It's got to be the shipping, and, I think im running humidity too low. Haven't caught it because so many sticky chicks I haven't thought about it... but they're all shipped eggs. Good point @CluckNDoodle thank you!

Total Sense. I was thinking the same thing. I went to bed last night without planning on checking through the night, because there were so many not hatched, I didn't want to sacrifice the lot for one egg. Now, it's probably time to investigate.

Also, in that egg above... im wondering if that vessel is only going to bleed out. It looks like it has nowhere to go... :-\ Hopefully that's not blood that's needed.

I used styptic powder for the first time during an assist in my last hatch. I believe the blood I was seeing was actually from where the chick tried to internally pip and hit a blood vessel but it was so much more than I usually see even after applying some pressure with a q-tip that I went to my cabinet and grabbed the styptic powder that I have on hand for dogs toenails. It worked like a charm even if it wasn't going to get absorbed by the chick, it made me feel better. Lol

Great pics Jolenesdad!!! Thanks for sharing your hatch assists... Slow and steady hands needed indeed, with all of those vessels! BTW, the zipping but not able to hatch scenario happened with multiple of our guinea eggs. I attributed it to constant falls in humidity when I opened the bator to grab the just hatched keets, so I agree it’s an issue of being too dry...

You’re doing great at giving this chick a fighting chance! Styptic sounds reasonable if still bleeding, but I bet it’s clotted now. It didn’t kill the baby yet to lose that blood so it’s an encouraging sign. I would think that if it’s breathing, you’ve done what you can until those vessels recede... As far as your unpipped egg, I can only offer support. I will say that my beak over wings malpositions were so close, I could have found the beak if I’d entered the air cell, but by Day 21, 24 hours after the rest hatched, they had already suffocated... I’m still doing the “what if’s” 5 weeks later!
