JUNE - JULY HATCH-ALONG!!!!!!!

Update before bed:
2 Hatches
Silver Laced Orpington
Chocolate Mottled Orpington
(I won't know what any of these orpingtons really are until they dry out, because they're from Papa's Poultry project pens and could be various things...)

9 External pips, most look like they'll be hatched by the morning!

Also, I’m definitely going to try giving to my broody what I’m going to keep. I HAVE to try! She is so in the zone I think it’s going to work.

Instead of moving her, I’ve made the arrangements to move all the other birds out of her coop tomorrow.

Best of luck with your broody and the rest of your hatch!!!

I was thinking the same thing after the ducks. Like isn’t this supposed to be fast? :lau

But now I remember the ducks. Painfully slow. I can’t imagine any of these not going from pip to out in under 24 hours, and those ducks. Omg. 72 hours on some.

DANG!!!! 7r hrs, i couldn't do that unless i was gone for all of them! lol

Anything new hatch? I have had 3 leghorns hatch and a BCM so far out of 20 some eggs last night, and much more pips.
And sorry i keep botheriung you about it, but i just love hearing about other peoples hatches! :lau:pop

Thats the point of a hatch a long, checking in on everyones hatch!!!

Ugh what a morning. And I brought the toddler in with me so it was a constant battle of OMG please stay seating you CANNOT come over to this. :lau

I need to do some research. This is now the second time that I have had BOTH sticky chicks AND shrink wrapped chicks. UGH. I think it's got something to do with shipping.

I came in this morning to about 10 chicks rambling around and several probs. two chicks that had not been able to zip, but had popped around the whole shell. that was an easy fix, they seemed like maybe they had been there a while, but, perked up after some Nutri drench. They were already fairly dry in the shell.... :-\

There were a few that successfully hatched but COVERED in gunk. two with their eyes sealed shut because they dried overnight like that. :-( Poor babies.

I assisted 4 this morning for a total hatch of 14. All healthy and well... now.

I lost 4 eggs yesterday. They had been shaking and I don't know now. Just gone.

I have 5 Pending eggs.

2 pipped externally, all looks good
1 pipped internally with GIGANTIC saddle cell, so I will keep my eye in case it's stuck in there.
1 Pipped on the opposite side of the air cell and the bottom, and Im glad I checked it. It was sort of suffocating I think REALLY crusty pip on the bottom of the egg. I opened the air cell, and it's not ready, so I opened his pip a little tiny to let his beak show, and have him back in the Bator.

1 im worried about.

This egg I marked BAD at lockdown. Theres some fluid in there and a GIGANTIC air bubble on the side that doesn't really look connected to the air cell at the top. Like it does connect to the air cell, but, its a different color.... like something detached along the way, its weird. I was about to write it off, and I saw movement at the air cell end.

I opened up the air cell, and its a disaster. Half receded and half HUGE veins. bigger than Ive seen, and splattered veins. I don't know what to do. I didn't feel like I could break this membrane to do a pip for it, I now have it in an egg carton, upright, just watching it. I feel like maybe it's dying.... I put an arrow in the one photo to its beak.

This gif shows the huge air cell and a little of this bloody mess by the beak. Do you think it tried to pip there and broke a vessel?

Glad for the ones that hatched but sad that your hatch is having troubles too.. I guess that the good news with the one you opened is that you can find its beak... Yes, those vessels look terrible and it does seem likely he pipped through one... Is there a clear area that you can make a small hole to beak!so it can start breathing? Doesn’t seem like those vessels will be able to support oxygen needs for long... Hopefully a more experienced assister will come along... Or maybe tag someone who does a lot of assists?

I got a spot. I was super concerned that that big vessel would be bothered by the beak but I just sat here thinking it clearly has tried to pip, I need to help it or it’s a goner.

I’m hoping it just looks worse. He is breathing now, still chewing, and made a chirp so fingers crossed!

With every other egg pipped, should I open the air cell of the last (largest saddle I have) egg to see what’s happening or how long do I wait when it hasn’t internally pipped?

It sounds like some exciting progress! I agree that I think a lot of your issues are definitely due to shipping. It's the primary factor that I have zero experience with. If you have anything local that you want to hatch it may be a good idea to do a hatch just to see what happens without the shipping factor and also clarify if it's something with the incubator or just from rough handling.

The membrane drying to them is often from too low of humidity. So you may have a combo situation where the jostling from shipment seems to increase chances of fluid pockets and in this case, sticky chicks. This is all based on an assumption though.

I second @Mixed flock enthusiast on puncturing a small hole in the membrane where you see the beak and no veins.
