I've been using this for my chicks that I just got this morning and it's barely getting hot! I've seen some reviews out there defending it saying that's how it's supposed to work and that chicks aren't meant to be cooked, rather, it's only mildly warm to imitate a hen. But so far my chicks have been huddled under there and seem either sleepy or lethargic. I put a thermometer under there to check and it's only 90°F! If they're not getting enough heat, are they ever going to want to leave the heater to get food or water? I'm getting really worried.

I don’t know anything about this.. but did you make sure they got food and water first thing.. and know where it is? I would think 90 is warm enough...

I dipped their beaks in the water but I don't think all of them actually drank it. I showed them the feeder too but they didn't look too interested. I think they were still in shock from the trip. Should I attempt to show them again in a few hours?

Yes, def try again and make sure they take sip.. plus, you are probably right.. could just be stressed and tired.. I hope all of your babies do wonderfully :)

I haven't tried the plate but as long as it feels like it's warming up it should be working. Plates and pads work by direct contact with the chicks, not by warming up the air around it, so it may be hard to get a good temperature reading. It shouldn't be so hot that it feels like it will burn your hand, but it should be hot enough that you can easily feel it when in contact.

Since you just got them they probably are stressed and tired and disoriented. Obviously keep a close eye on them.

Update! The chicks seem pretty happy now. Coming in and out from under it to eat and drink. I don't think any of them are cold. They just seem sleepy.

Still curious to know other peoples' experiences with this product. It was the only brand available during Tractor Supply chick days, so there has to be other folks out there that have tried it.

I have this plate and my chicks seem pretty happy with it so far. They snooze under it, and will come out to eat and drink, or zoom around if I talk to them, then slip back under when they need more warmth

My chicks have pipped and will be ready to go into the brooder by tomorrow. I have this plate too. I’ve got it on already. But I also am concerned it doesn’t get very warm. The reading I took off of it said 97.4...
They have been in an incubator at 99.5 for so long I’m afraid that’s too cold. The garage is at 70 during the day. Not sure at night. But I don’t want to have to use a heat lamp.
How did your brood do?
