My wife complained about some big knot holes in our gate. I went down to the lumber yard to buy some new boards to rebuild it. But they were really expensive, and replacing the old ones would be a lot of work, and it was really hot that day. So I just bought a couple of signs to nail over those holes. "Keep out, bad dog," and "No trespassing."
My lawyer son said that the bad dog sign was an admission that we had a dangerous animal and that the sign had to go. Well, actually the dog was fictitious. We don't have one. So I left it.
My story was that it was an instruction for the bad dog to keep out of my yard.
However, the signs were made of metal and someone pried them off the gate to steal them. They also took all of the metal water meter covers in the neighborhood.
If you put up a sign, make sure it is a cheap plastic one.
