didnt want to overwhelm you at first! we were gonna brood the chicks in the basement in a 30 gallon black rubbermaid trough from tsc. the longer not so wide one, with a red light and a 100 watt. red so they dont start killing one another. the wife also would like a few guinnes? dont know were to get just a few? will they mix with the rocks? i was gonna free range the guinneees? will rock hens white or barred go broody, we would wont more chicks? some say they do go brooody some say they wont any mean bird would be put to deep freezze, the good roosters would be kept for breeding along with good hens, but better looking birds will be kept first. will a white rock hen and a barred roo make a what? vice versa?

and had i already asked about getting and breeding birds from the same order and being mixed. i dont want to in breed though its hard birds aint it? dont have the same effects correct? once again feel free to comment on any of the above

If you want just a few guineas, you can post an ad on bestfarmbuys or craigslist, or just go to a local auction. Any guinea you would get would need to be penned up for at least 6 weeks so it knows where home is, even the babies. Of course little babies would need to be brooded till they were at least 6 weeks old, just like chicks.
Do you mean mix like breed with? Or just live with? They will do both, if given the chance. I don't think they normally interbreed, unless you have an odd number of guineas. Guineas usually pair up, so it's best to have a 1:1 cock to hen ratio. They can be aggressive to chickens, it just depends. Mine like to pull the tail feathers of the roosters, though they seem to be getting better. They just run all the chickens away from the food till they get their fill. Guineas are good bug catchers, in the warmer months, 90% of their diet is insects. So if you have a tick problem, you definitely need guineas!! You would need to have some type of coop for them so predators don't get them at night. You would have to pen them up in the coop for 6 weeks at least so they know where they are supposed to go. If you get adults and don't do this, chances are they will leave and try to find their previous home. Young ones would just get lost, that's what happened to mine.
You can inbreed chickens, it is not the same as mammals. If you do it a lot it could cause problems. Most hatcheries get a lot of eggs, from different sources, so chances are very few that yours will be related.
I'm not 100% sure, but I would think white and barred would make some kind of sex link. You would have to go to the breeds & genetics forum on that one. I have heard that barred rocks are good mamas, but I don't have any experience with those. You can ask that also on the breeds & genetics forum.
Ok, I think that's it for this time! I need to go to bed now, but ask anything else, and I or someone else would be happy to help!

Gosh girl!! Where do you work?

I work a swing shift at RR Donnelley. We print magazines 24/7. So I am in the middle of working my 6 weeks of weekend nights.

Really not too bad until I get sleepy. On these short days I actually get to see some daylight on the days I work.
Well gotta go. Getting ready to head home and go to bed.

I think it's a female, no obvious chin thingy - I'm waiting to see if I get two eggs in one day, that would tell me

Well, maybe the little girl duck was just too cold to quack yesterday morning,
lau.gif

She certainly told me in no uncertain terms this morning to hurry and fill the water dish. It wasn't excessive, but it was demanding

Once she had her water, she was happy, and hushed up.

I'm gonna try to get them to go out again today and free range a little and explore the place. I'll put them back inside tonight (probably at dinner time) but if I can get them to venture out a little each day, maybe they'll get used to the idea. I'll wait to let them out til later in the day, so they won't be out long. They might feel more comfortable, too, once there are more ducks to wander with.

Jr. spent the night outside, but she was there this morning when I went out to do chores. I looked all over for her last night, not sure where she slept - not in the open, for sure. Cinnabon was out, too - but I found her. Poor girl was hunkered down by the shrubs out front, like she planned to stay put - probably trying to warm her feet up. Once she realized everyone else went inside, she went right to the coop, though. Jr. is used to sleeping out, though, and Cinn isn't.
Jr. can be pretty wild - she is one strange chicken.

Yeah, I'm almost positive I have a pair of silver. The male (that I know for sure is male) has a very obvious bib under his chin. He's pretty
big_smile.png

The other - that I think is female - is just slightly lighter, and not in a distinct bib, under her chin.

The splash Shelley says is a male - I can't tell, myself
lau.gif
and the "wild" colored one is female.

I love to hear them "crow" or whatever ya call the male sound - my hubby laughs every time he hears them.

Oh, my sister might be breeding her snake (an orange creamsicle corn) to someone else's Ghost corn (I had a ghost corn, he died this last summer

) if anyone wants babies, maybe she'll have some to sell when she comes down this spring.

You probably have a better chance of the guineas getting along with the chickens if they are raised together, but even that is no guarantee. Guineas are mean cusses. But if they free range, and the chickens don't, you'll be ok if they are seperate when they are adults.
You can get "just a few" chicks at auctions or through Cackle - minimum order per breed is 5. Otherwise, if you want adults, you can get a few at auctions, too. Sometimes on Craigslist and the like will have some advertised.

I'm not sure what color combo would come out of white and barred rocks - but they'd probably be pretty. Maybe a white with black speckles in no particular pattern.

I have one barred rock hen who has never gone broody, but she is an odd bird
lau.gif
the white rocks I have seem to be inclined, but haven't gone full broody yet. They do tend to sit on the nest longer (maybe cause it's cold) even after they lay the egg, so maybe they're thinking on it
