Does anyone have a Bottle Tree? and if so, did ya buy it or make it yourself, and what shape is it? (straight, pine, free form, etc...)

I've been wanting a Bottle Tree for years, hubby now has a welder, been thinking of making one for myself.

if I make one (actually two, cause my sister wants one, too) and they turn out nice, maybe I'll sell em, I wonder if there's a market for Bottle Trees around here.

Bruce was thinking about making cages - I figured they'd not be very cost effective, but he wants to look into it, anyway. At the very least he can make ME some more cages

I got to go turn out coop lights, be back in a bit....

I bought 2 rolls of wire, one is 1/2"x1" mesh and 30"H x 15' L (I think, may be 10'). The other is (or rather was) 24"H x 15'L, and 1"x1" mesh. It was around $32 for both. I have one cage that is 30"W x 36"L x 11"H, 1/2x1 mesh on bottom, 1x1 all around. The other is about 30"W x 20"L x 14"H (+/-). It also has 1/2x1 bottom and 1x1 sides and top, and I ran out of wire. So the front and back will probably be 1/2x1/2 hardware cloth, I still have some of the 1/2x1 wire left, but it is not cheap!! It is only for Cris's pigeons, and they won't get out! The other 'cage' wire is strong enough to keep the shape of the cage, so the hardware cloth would just be to keep them in. But it was a major pain in the butt!! I will most likely buy cages from now on, unless I need a really big one! Then I'm sure it would be better to make them. A smaller sized cage just isn't worth it to try and make them.

Shelley, don't forget I promised you any extra silkies I have, (if they hatch this time, that is!) I only want to keep a pullet of each color for the time being. And the Seramas, and the Mille Fluers.

Hwy 75 is shut down between mi marker 55 to the TN state line both directions because of several wrecks caused by icy conditions. Be careful heading home in the morning Croney if you're working tonight. Pulaski county is in the weather advisery for icy rain and snow showers til 10ish tomorrow morning.

Heya all -

Well, Duck Free Ranging day 1 - so far so good.

I let the ducks out this morning - well, the little girl went out happily on her own, little boy had to be put out. I think she is a little smarter than he is

I let them out after I let the chickens out - so the chickens were all out in the front yard, and saw them out and came running back to make acquaintances.

I was worried the chickens might see them as intruders, but nope, they were fascinated, and all of them stood around chatting, the chickens checked out the duck house, drank some duck water, ate some duck food, and then went off on their own. The ducks acted like the chickens were just part of the duck world, and they all blended pretty well.

Toby gave them a little start, but he was just happy to have another critter with wings, so he was behaving himself. I called him back by me, then took him over to introduce him to the ducks with ME there. He was very good about it. I'll still have to keep an eye on him for a few days to make sure he knows those are more of Mama's Chickens, and he can't "play" with them.

I put their house, water and food right outside the chicken run, so they know that is where to hang out. So far they haven't gotten too ambitious about exploring. Of course, with the nasty dead grass and frozen ground, there isn't much to explore.

I let Mr. Speckles and crew out into the run, so they can stretch their legs - they were getting nasty this morning, giving me major dirty looks when I went in to turn on their coop lights. They all seem to be more concerned with their stomachs than anything, and are trying to figure out how to get out to the duck water and duck food

Well, gonna go run and peek out at them again, make sure I can still see them. I doubt they'll go far - they stick pretty close to the water, it seems like.

Christy, not a problem, if Shelley doesn't want them you are more than welcome to them, if they hatch. As I said earlier I only want a pullet in each color for the time being. I can't wait for the spring time and warmer weather so I can get done with all the building plans for the yard.

Stay warm everybody!

What color silkies do you have? I would split them with croney

I really don't need whites, I have 5 running in the yard, and 6 cooking in the bator. Plus some more coming from BamaChicken. Hopefully most of hers are buffs, those are the ones I really want!
