That is funny, he must be starving to risk being so close! I think all the free ranging chickens keep the birds at bay, dad said last spring the yard looked red from all the cardinals, and I haven't seen one yet.

Yup..I noticed mine a few days ago also.

he had first hovered by the hook I hang the feeder on before I even went to get the feeder (he must be a returning customer from last year).

Our hummers out here are pretty brave, they hang right out and buzz through the porch (have to duck sometimes) chasing each other away from the feeder. I've been meaning to hang another feeder

but it is funny to watch one stand guard over it and try to chase everyone else off.

I took a bunch of brooder chicks outside today and found my second snake (gardner) under a tarp I use to provide the chicks with shade. I found the first snake (also gardner) on top of my breeding pen a couple of days after first seeing it. Something had caught it and removed its head. I must have scared whatever had killed it off. I didn't let it go to waste. I took the headless snake and gave it to my laying hens.
There was almost a fight. But several hens didn't recognize it as food but Star sure did.

In other news, I had to fill my Thistle feeder for the thrushes and deer tits. I only have one collard green plant that is blooming worth speeking of. When the thrushes land on it they bend it over and it is now laying almost flat. The blooms are now starting to curve upwards again.

It is starting to look dark in the west I think a line of rain is comming my way. Need to get the chicks in before that happens.

Well I brought my chicks in and put my 4 week old Dark Cornish chicks in with my 6 week old Cornish x's. You may think that the little ones may not have a chance but the little Dark Cornish are the most hyper active chicks I have ever raised. They immediately started foraging in the deep litter. One jumped on the back of one of the big ones and they both stood there as if things like that were normal.

Just before the light rain showers started I saw some small red thrushes. Two sets of three. Looked like from last year with young.

I also supprised a ground hog in my back yard and it ran through my catch em alive trap and it closed on him. So I thought, he somehow managed to be moving fast enough that he made it through before it got him. I'll have to work on this problem.

I checked the bator and have 15 hatched chicks and about 10 more eggs to go. Not too bad for a 20 egg bator.

My one Bantam BR roo has now landed on my left hand and typing is slow. Must... re sist e motion al ... attach ment.... Aau...hh ...too late.

So we are getting ready to take some fowl to the Exotic Animal Sale in Cookville TN. I would like some opinions on Brahmas. I was talking to Bluedog and he mentioned how they were such slow growers and hogs. I didnt notice how much more they ate until he said that. They are beautiful though.
But right now I am considering taking all of my brahmas. Some that are laying and others that are 3 month and 2 month. We have several 6 week old chicks. And some odds.
I have talked myself out of actually going though. I really dont need to bring anything else home.
I am thinking that I want to have in my flock Silkies, Australorps, Cochins, Red Sex Link, Wyahdottes and Polish. My partner has barred rock, White Leghorns, Delawares, and Comets.

I love my brahmas - but yes, they are hogs

I figure their personality makes up for it, though (and I can buy cheap food, so it isn't too bad for me - 50# bag of 16% for $6.30).

What color brahmas do you have? dark, buff or light and how much were you asking on them? I have people looking for certain breeds all the time, maybe I can hook ya up with someone (if you didn't want to go to the sale, I mean).

I am hoping for $15 for the adults. The buffs I have is 1 roo with 4 hens. Maybe I will even get more at the auction??? Probably not. Then I have a pair of buffs and whites that are 3 months old. Which I dont know how to price them or the 2 month olds I have. I think I have 4 of them and cant tell yet roo or pullet.
Mine are in a coop so I dont see much character if they have it.

Mine are sweeties, when I go looking for eggs, they just raise up a bit (if they are in the nestbox) and look at me like "hurry up, workin' here, lady".

I can go in and pick them up and usually have to push them out of my way, cause they mob me for scratchies and treats. I've never had chickens I could actually pick up and pet - but these guys love it. My other chickens like me, just don't like to be held and petted.

Oh!! George gave me a scare today!! (George is my oeg rooster)
He was sparring with Mr. Speckles through the chicken wire and hooked his long spur in the fencing. I was afraid he was gonna break his leg before I got over there, but all he did was strip his spur - now I guess I need to go do the other one on purpose (been putting it off, didn't see a problem with it - until today!!).

I happened to be out there working on the duck pen and it is right in the line of view of where they were fighting. Poor guy, it stopped bleeding pretty quickly, but then he must have hit it on something and it started again.

I hope it'll be ok by morning. It had stopped again by bedtime, but man, it was bad there for awhile.

Hey Meri, I tried calling Larry like 3 times today and never got an answer. I'll try again tomorrow, and if I don't get in touch with him I'll try May. I'm sure he'll be at Sano, he always is, so maybe he'll have some baby ducks with him again this time? I'll let you know if I get in touch with him or May, and if either of them have some.

There is someone looking for buff orps and astrolorps, I gave them your screen name. Idk if they were wanting chicks though.

I trimmed my Bantam Brahma's spurs and they started to bleed. Kind of scared me because the blood didn't seem to want to stop and he was a little roo. He seemed to be a little weak for a day or two then he was the boss roo again.

I just candled the unhatched eggs and found 9 which had not started to develop. So that leaves 2 unhatched eggs and 15 hatched. One of the unhatched eggs leaked when I picked it up which is a bad sign. It has probably drowned. The really big egg has a huge air pocket so it probably will not hatch.

All of the chicks are some sort of Black Jersey Giant. One has a redish tint to its fur. Yea! That means it is a Jersey roo x NH hen with red tint. Like Rusty. I hope it is a hen so I can cross Rusty with her.
