Random question...Do you live in town? I'm curious because your sig says you have 8 roos. I am dying to keep a rooster or two and hatch eggs, but I'm not sure how it would work out since I live in a suburb. I doubt a rooster could be louder than the 40,000 howling, barking dogs in our neighborhood...

Well Andora... I have two roos at my house who don't leave the coop very often and only with my supervision. They are both breeds that don't crow very much. They were out all day yesterday as I was off work and could keep an eye on them.

They were watching my 8 NH 13 week old chicks. (4 hens and 4 roos) No crowing from them yet.

Two other roos are caged seperately because of fighting and tail feather picking, at a different location in a house basement. They don't get to leave very often either. I am working on a coop inthe old one car carage seperate from the house. They are Dark Bantam Brahma's who's hens were killed by a dog.

I also have 4 Black Jersey Giants roos who are too young to crow and the breed tends to be quiet.

Mainly it helps to have understanding neighbors who are use to chickens. Both neighborhoods are older and many of the residence use to have chickens at one time.

One neighbor had chickens in the recient past but is too old to fool with them now. One neighbor lets me use her back yard to run my chicks in in exchange for keeping the yard mowed and looking nice.

There is a big empty lot on one side of my house. And an empty house behind me.

When ever I see a neighbor I ask if the chickens are any problem and I've never had any complaints. Don't ask about crowing, as that is always a problem.

An 84 year old lady who lives behind and off to the side of me tells me they reminder her of growing up when everyone in the neighborhood had chickens. I share eggs and garden produce with her.

I don't keep roos just to keep roos... I have two I keep for breeding purposes and will keep about two more for the same reason. It's just hard to part with a chicken you name and cared for for so long.

P.S. I don't keep any bad roos. Don't have much tollerance for them. Noisy ones either.

Lexington has a loose leash law which states that a pet must be either confined or on a leash when it could interact with people.
Ever seen a roo on a leash?

Of course it would be Jim who posted a roo on a leash.

We have two buff orp chicks that turned out to be roos. My daughter loves them. I was planning on trying to keep at least one of them (as a pet and also because I want my girls to have his babies

) but since I found out about the two illnesses my flock carries, I have to send them on with the rest of my flock to their new chicken hospice home so I can start fresh.

I ordered new chicks from Ideal that will come at the end of the month, and I know I'm going to get attached to those packing peanuts.

And my polish are straight run, so I'm sure one of those will be a rooster too.

The neighbor that lives behind us is older (he won't tell me their names, he tells me to call them Old Man and Old Lady lol) and he admires my chickens. He and his wife sit out and watch them and Old Man gives my birds over ripe produce from his gardens. He told me he used to breed quail in his yard! (He's lived here since the mid 1950's so I'm not sure what time period he bred quail. Are they noisy?) The neighbors that live to the left of me are nice, but the mom is terrified that her three little girls will get diseases from my birds. I'm not sure they would appreciate the beauty of a rooster. The neighbors on the opposite side can't really see my yard because of trees and my garage...but their teenage sons broke the new gutter off of my garage last year by practicing lacrosse up against the side that runs along their backyard and it's still not fixed, so they really have no room to complain...

Which breeds are quieter? I saw someone mention in a post last night that their speckled sussex roos don't crow?!?

Not sure what kind of roos would be quieter. Bantam roos have a very high pitched crow that doesn't carry very far.

Quail are not loud at all. The males do make a crowing sound, but it is not that bad. Other than that they make a cooing kind of sound, or just a sound that is like a chick peep, but a bit louder.

I live in the Mt. Vernon area. Say, I saw on here about the chickens from Berea that were sick, we have and do buy from a Berea seller does anyone know the person's name so we won't buy from him. I have yet to go to the London fleamarket for chickens , but we plan to go soon as my hubby says we are getting low on chickens , (really we are not low , we keep adding , but if he has an empty pen he thinks he has to fill it up.. LOL)

We are looking for some Rhode Island Red Hens , already laying if anyone has any they want to sale.

We have some Blue Laced Red Whyndots for sale as well if anyone is interested , they can email me at [email protected]

Thanks for the welcomes..

PS
I am looking for a pair or so of Top Hats , but shhhhh , don't tell my hubby , he may not want me to take his pens.. LOL

We have some RIR hens that are for sale, that are under 1 year old. They lay very well. Dad just has too many. He said he would take $10 each for them. We are outside of Columbia. Not sure how many he wants to sell, but he has like 30 of them. He also has 2 SLW roos and some oddball chickens that are running around the yard.

Heya all -

Welcome new people, and ummm... I am not awake yet, so fill in the blanks.

I have a Q Cindy - (or anyone) -

If I am giving antibiotics in a 5 gallon waterer - am I supposed to change it out every day - dump and put in new?
I mean, will the antibiotics lose their effect if I let it sit for more than say 24 hours in the water?

The jap guy really swelled up yesterday, poor baby's eye was swollen shut. It is better today a little, after having some antibiotics, he can open it a little now. James looks really good, he doesn't look sick at all anymore, but I'm still keeping him seperate from the other cochins for now.

well, busy today, will be back later to check in again -

Meri

Don't know if it loses it's effectiveness but I only put in a couple gallons in my 5G waterers with the med and change it daily. I also have a bottle of Tylan if what your using isn't effective enough. I can come over sooner with it if you might need it. Let me know.

Cindy

I know with the sulmet it says that you're supposed to change it dialy, but not sure about antibiotics. You can do like I do and mix it in a milk jug or something similar. That way you can keep it cool and it doesn't get contaminated, so you can just refill it as needed.

Are the cochin pair that I brought you sick as well? I didn't have them with mine, they were in the tractor that the hen with chicks was in. I don't have any that are sick that I noticed, so idk what to say.
