Well, I have to wait on the bantam cochins - one of her hens went broody (and she only has two hens).
It's a bummer, but maybe for the best, since I have the standard sized eggs going into the bator, now I don't have to keep everyone seperate. Since it's my first hatch, I didn't want to try to stagger the hatch, either.
She said I'm first on the list come spring, so that'll be ok, too
Maybe by spring I can talk her into gathering more than 8 of them to send (in case I get some messed up ones).
I'll just have to console myself with the standard cochins, and seeing what sort of funky chickens I get out of Shelley's dad's eggs,
Man is it cold this morning!! Oreo has decided that she is definately a porch chicken (gonna have to break her of that notion) she tries to come up on the porch every time she sees me up there, now. And, since Mooney follows her everywhere, she is looking at the steps like she is thinking about it, too.
Funny thing is, I never really handled these girls that much, didn't pay much attention to them, all of a sudden they're my biggest fans. I know it's all about the treats, LOL but sheesh. Mooney, Cinn (cinnabon) and Oreo all hang out together, so Cinn might start getting the notion, too - although she is a bit more stand-off-ish than the other two. (now ya know why I named them after snacks, LOL - they love the snacks).
Everyone survived the cold night ok. I checked on the new baby girls last night, and they were up on top of the brooder cage snuggling with the japs. I was hoping they'd find someone to snuggle with. No one slept under the brooder lamp, but it must have given some warmth to the coop, so I'll probably run it again tonight. I had everyone locked in with the door closed, I didn't want any drafts getting in that I could prevent. The chicken door isn't air tight when it's closed, but it helps. Three nights ago I had to chase everyone inside, last night they all went in before I even got there, LOL they must have been chilled.
I wish I could get Miss Celie to go inside at night - she insists on sleeping on top of the woodpile, still, won't go into the coop. Even if I could get her into the barn it would be better. She'd have hay to snuggle down into. Maybe I'll put some hay down out by the woodpile - although it wouldn't stay there long - something would come and mess with it or eat it. I do have a 5 gallon bucket I could fill with hay on its side, maybe she'd use that.
I don't know, it's like trying to get teenagers to do what ya want, LOL next to impossible. Shug and Jr. have been sleeping on the woodpile with her, though, maybe they can all snuggle together.
I have a feeling it's gonna be a colder winter this year - they've been saying it will be, but it doesn't seem like it got this cold this early last year.
Well, gotta go call my mom - see if she is home yet. My stepdad never called me back to update me, and I can't call her, because I don't know what room she's in.
Be back in a bit -
Meri
