Kentucky people

Hey Cindy---I can give you some of my new baby guineas if you want, so yours can have some friends!! I'll probably take them to the auction when they get bigger anyway, since they are the regular colored ones, I like the pretties!

I would love Jersey Giants...I hear they are so sweet. Are they pullets or roos? I pmed KySilkies! They may be too big for the pullet I have who will need a companion, but I have friend who is looking for chicks nearby and I'll ask her if she's interested! Thank you! I can't have roos here (I live in the city limits with a neighbor right beside me but I'll ask the same friend about the Brahma roos. Do you have any pics I could pass on to her? I'm sorry to hear about the dogs and hawk taking your pullets...that would be awful!

Thanks Shelley for the offer...

But Bluedog told Layne when he gave the guinea as a keet to him that when we find out the sex he was giving him a mate for it.

Well, I have to wait on the bantam cochins - one of her hens went broody (and she only has two hens).

It's a bummer, but maybe for the best, since I have the standard sized eggs going into the bator, now I don't have to keep everyone seperate. Since it's my first hatch, I didn't want to try to stagger the hatch, either.

She said I'm first on the list come spring, so that'll be ok, too

Maybe by spring I can talk her into gathering more than 8 of them to send (in case I get some messed up ones).

I'll just have to console myself with the standard cochins, and seeing what sort of funky chickens I get out of Shelley's dad's eggs,

Man is it cold this morning!! Oreo has decided that she is definately a porch chicken (gonna have to break her of that notion) she tries to come up on the porch every time she sees me up there, now. And, since Mooney follows her everywhere, she is looking at the steps like she is thinking about it, too.

Funny thing is, I never really handled these girls that much, didn't pay much attention to them, all of a sudden they're my biggest fans. I know it's all about the treats, LOL but sheesh. Mooney, Cinn (cinnabon) and Oreo all hang out together, so Cinn might start getting the notion, too - although she is a bit more stand-off-ish than the other two. (now ya know why I named them after snacks, LOL - they love the snacks).

Everyone survived the cold night ok. I checked on the new baby girls last night, and they were up on top of the brooder cage snuggling with the japs. I was hoping they'd find someone to snuggle with. No one slept under the brooder lamp, but it must have given some warmth to the coop, so I'll probably run it again tonight. I had everyone locked in with the door closed, I didn't want any drafts getting in that I could prevent. The chicken door isn't air tight when it's closed, but it helps. Three nights ago I had to chase everyone inside, last night they all went in before I even got there, LOL they must have been chilled.

I wish I could get Miss Celie to go inside at night - she insists on sleeping on top of the woodpile, still, won't go into the coop. Even if I could get her into the barn it would be better. She'd have hay to snuggle down into. Maybe I'll put some hay down out by the woodpile - although it wouldn't stay there long - something would come and mess with it or eat it. I do have a 5 gallon bucket I could fill with hay on its side, maybe she'd use that.

I don't know, it's like trying to get teenagers to do what ya want, LOL next to impossible. Shug and Jr. have been sleeping on the woodpile with her, though, maybe they can all snuggle together.

I have a feeling it's gonna be a colder winter this year - they've been saying it will be, but it doesn't seem like it got this cold this early last year.

Well, gotta go call my mom - see if she is home yet. My stepdad never called me back to update me, and I can't call her, because I don't know what room she's in.

Be back in a bit -
Meri

Tubbychicken,
Click on my name and you can see the Brahma roos in the third picture.

The black Giants are a pair, one roo and one pullet. So far none of them have ever attempted to crow. I don't know how they will be as adults as this is my first experience with them. I hatched them out on June 11th.

The two I wish to cull have olive legs and feet instead of black ones so I'd rather not keep them for breeding purposes.

The hen is also the runt. She may be being kept from the food and may fill out fine in a less competitive environment. She doesn't seem to be undernurished. She isn't bony, just small. The bigger hens seem to be bony. Jerseys are slow growing and will look bony for the first year before they start to fill out.

Personality wise they are all calm but somewhat stand offish. The pair I am culling tend to be a little more inquisitive and will approach more readily than the others.

PM me if interested.

Heya !! Welome to another Columbia person!!!

Shelley and I are both in Columbia (so to speak).
I'm just on my way over to her house, actually, to grab some eggs and a couple of pullets.

We'll all have to hook up sometime and have coffee and talk chickens

BTW _ the spitzs - are those eggs in a bator or are those laying or close to laying yet? I'd love to buy some hatching eggs from you. I have three spitzs - none laying yet - I'm not even sure how many are roos and how many are pullets. They aren't exectly "type" so I am looking for some other breeding stock to mix with them to improve the look.

Peace -
Meri

Getting together sounds like so much fun! I'm new to the chicken biz and have LOTS to learn! In regards to my spitz, I think I now have 3 roo's and 5 hens. Hard to figure out sometimes. One of my chicken friends in Casey Co. says they will be ready to lay around January. From what what I've read, they lay early. I'm thinking by end of November or mid- December.

The eggs in the bator are Bantam Porcelain D'Uccle's I bought off Ebay. Lord only knows if they will hatch or not. I did candle a few the other day. I see veins but then again I have no idea what I'm looking for since this is my first bator experience too.

I'm so excited that Columbia people are on here!
