Sorry croney! Didn't mean to ignore you! Those are pretty cochins. Kinda look like Meri's James? Think that's his name! Those frizzles are so funny looking! My son wants some so bad! I'm gonna get some frizzled polish eggs for him in the spring from someone right here in KY. He should love those!! They have funky feathers and poofy heads! He'll be IN LOVE!!

I hate it for you that you are going through all this sickness...Hope all are well soon. Remember I can bring you some Tylan when I go visit if the other antibiotic isn't helping fast enough by that time. I followed the directions that came with it and treated for 3 days as it stated. After the first day Raoul and Little Man were already starting to get their crows back... Now they are on electrolites and vitamins and are sounding like their old selves again. I also bought some Turmeric Immune System Booster to add to their feed from now on and Vita-pro-B for their water. I can bring some of that stuff too for after treatment if you need me to.

Let me know...And I'm not worried about the babies I know you'll take excellent care of them...

Cindy

Yeah, about the Cochins how were you lucky enough to just find a trio on your way home? Or was the pick up planned? You are just too lucky... I'm jealous.

UPDATE: The experts say it looks like a hen!

How much do you want for her??

I thought it looked like a hen too. I will look at her/it again when you might possibly want it to see if there is any more signs of what it is. I would want $25 for her. I bought a bourbon red a couple of weeks ago the same size and that is what I paid.

It was planned. I found some chickens listed in the banner and called to see what they had. And YES they had some cochins. She is also a newbie to back yard chickens. I think it is newtochickensnky or something like that. They were really nice. Her husband and I had lots of fun trying to catch the rooster after he let it get away. MEN

If it were coryza, would it only affect some of them? because the greater majority of the birds (all in the same coop) aren't affected at all.

I don't want to take in Cindy's babies and have them get sick if I have something serious here. I'll try calling that vet tomorrow, to see what they think I ought to do.

meri (who is getting more depressed as the conversation goes on)

I'm so sorry yours are sick. I know how miserable it feels.

The necropsy told me mine had coryza. Not all of them had swollen faces, only one got a very swollen face. This one:

She died a few days ago.

All of my chickens have been dying one by one from it, not all at once. Some apparently catch it quicker than others, I read the incubation period for IC can be anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks depending on the bird and its over all level of health. Do yours have smelly snot? Mine smelled, which is a symptom of Coryza, but I thought they were just dirty from being sick and not cleaning themselves. I swear it smelled like nothing but nasty old bird.

You're lucky to have a vet that sees chickens! If you need more info you could always sacrifice one and take it to the diagnostic center here in Lexington for a necropsy. It only costs $10.

I think the guy that sold me the sick chickens travels all around. Someone else on here is weary of him and said that he sells in London, and the sick chicken guy told me once that he takes his birds to shows every month. I'm terrified now to get any birds except for chicks from a hatchery, especially because the avian leukosis this guy's chickens have is transmitted through eggs. (Coryza isn't though!)

If it still looks hen-ish next month, I would gladly take her. I am a bit low on funds atm, and have to wait for cash!

<edit> About how old is she, do you know? The ones I am getting next month are about 14 weeks now, I think.

I'm giving aereomycin (sp?) and it says 7-10 days. It is for infectious sinusitis or coryza. The problem is, if I get them all healthy, they'll still be carriers, which means I can't trade, swap or sell - and any newbies I intro to the flock could catch it.

I've been searching to find something else that it could be, I'm afraid that any respiratory illness is gonna make them carriers for life, though.

I just find it odd that some of my birds are totally unaffected by this. My layers aren't affected at all, nor are the boys in the roo cell. just the cochins and the banties (and not even all of the banties - just the one jap and james and etta - and diva was, but is better)

I'd hate for it to spread to everyone, and I wonder if I just culled the banties and cochins (which I would hate to do, but would if I had to), then cleansed those coops if it would be ok to keep the others. I mean if the others would be clean and not carriers.

Now, if they were carriers, I could still sell hatching eggs to people - since it doesn't carry over to eggs, but couldn't sell birds.

I don't know what to do

If the meds your giving don't work for some of them you can try Sulmet. The poultry doctor at UK told me Sulmet and sulfa drugs are good for Coryza and that's what UK uses in their research labs to treat it.
