not a Virgo? hmmm.... Don't know much about Libras - dont recall anyone I know having been a Libra.

Now, FrChuck, when ya meet me, you'll notice right off I look rather "Whitebread"
wink.png

that's just my disguise...

I'm very quiet, and usually pretty easy to not notice.... Unless I know ya better - (or unless you've brought along some Jose') -
then you get to see the side of me most folks have to know me for years before they see
lau.gif

I've learned over the years that most people don't want to know about weirdness so I keep it under wraps (well, mostly - ask Shelley about my "Sewing Room"
wink.png
muahahahahaha)

I think I must be the only Politically Conservative Voodoo Flingin' Woman in all of Kentucky (or maybe all of the south).

I need a T-shirt that says "ask me about the skulls in my closet" just to see what looks I'll get from folks at Save A Lot......

eta - I used to have a chicken foot hanging from my rear view mirror in my truck - had to switch it out for something more Kentucky Friendly

Well we Libra's are well balanced. In other words, to make up for my wierdness I'm wierd in just the oposite way as well.

I've been told that I'm wierd in an okay way, but still wierd. So, I figured out that I must be within one standard devation of the Mean for wierdness. You know; plus or minus one sigma of average.

Okay... maybe two sigma... but still within limits I tell ya. After all two sigma includes about 92% of the population... ( well, assuming a "normal" population.)

Welcome sune42.

Hope all this nonsence hasn't scared you off. I have Black Jersey Giants, some New Hampshires, and some various cross breds. A few pages back we were discussing how the American bred of Barred rocks acted skiddish. as opposed to Orpington or Australorps ( which are a form of black orpingtons)

I also don't know about Wyandottes. I would get some and see if you like them. If you keep your hens penned during the winter you may need a bigger coop or put at least two levels in it to increase the floor space for them to move about.

But then I don't let my girls out much because of the hawk problem I seem to have during the winter. I don't have a "run" just let them run. ( I lost my last bantam this January (a roo) when I let them out during a nice day)

Chicks are like little kids they like to run. I see them run about 20 to 25 times their body length then jump and flap. For an adult that would be about a 25 foot run but that may be impractical. Different breds of chickens act differently so I could tell you something and your experience may be entirely different. It also depends on your space available.

There is a site which tells of all the characteristics of each bred including how well they stand confinement. I will have to look for it. It is pretty good.

Okay here it is: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

Good
luck with your chickens and feel free to jump in and ask questions. We might ignore you for a little while until we get a few words in edgewise but we will get to you.

Well I went over to check on my broody hen and what did I see looking back at me but a pure black little chick.
celebrate.gif

I checked on everybody's water and food and general health then looked in on my broody. the chick was gone but I was able to lift her tail feathers and found two other black and white chicks. So... so far I think that is three chicks.

I am going to take good care of this broody hen. She looks like she is still in good condition. I just need to find a better place for her and the youngins. I think half of the rooster pen is going to be the brooder for them. And I have to work tomorrow...
he.gif
So the arrangements will have to wait until Thursday afternoon. Which is when my bator hatch is due.
barnie.gif

I didn't look under her. Even tho I really wanted to, I figured that she was still setting tight for a reason and I didn't want to break her up now that she is this far along. So perhaps it is good that I have to work tomorrow so that I will not be bothering her.

Wish me luck. or actually her luck I guess...

Good luck estpr13. I hope she has lots of babies

I am still on standby with my broodies. I have 4
th.gif
2 silkies and 2 OEG. One of the OEG just started, so she still has a while. Gretta the game hen was supposed to hatch on Monday, but Nugget the OEGB kept contributing to Gretta's nest, so none of the eggs that were due hatched. But Gretta has more that are close to the same date (as each other), and looked to not be too much farther off, so I left her with those. The rest of her eggs, the ones that were still good, went to her daughter, who has yet to be named. I'm thinking Gracie, but I don't know. I should call her mean old bitty, cause I couldn't even check her with gloves on, I had to wait till after dark to see how many eggs she had. She shouldn't have had any, but she had one. Don't know who that one is from. It was a light brown egg, and fairly large, so it couldn't be from Nugget. And besides, Nugget likes to share with Gretta. 'Gracie' is in a 5 gallon bucket, so I don't see how one of the big hens could have gotten in with her, it's a pretty tight fit. My game girls are not the dainty type, they are just a tiny bit smaller than dad's standard birds.

I had 5 baby tibetan quail hatch yesterday. No more have hatched since. 3 of the ones that did hatch have died, 1 in the bator, 2 in the brooder. Not sure what happened there. They were a few days early, and I had to take them out of the bator sopping wet. The humidity was very high, and the one that hatched and got its head stuck in the turner, which had been dry already, was also soaked after being put into the bator. So I figured that they would be better off in the brooder. Guess not. But on a lighter note, one of Meri's button eggs has hatched.

It looks like it's a silver baby too.

I think that's all for the update right now.

That is so cool!!! Guess I need to set some of them myself, eh?

Too bad on your tibetans dying - wonder what the deal was there

Ya know, if I had just one more incubator I could have one for chickens, one for waterfowl and one for quail - that would be pretty nice, eh? Not sure where I'd put another incubator
lau.gif
but I'd find a place.

Had to switch cigarettes yesterday - dang taxes going up raised the ones I usually smoke to ridiculous heights (starting to look like Michigan prices). Got a couple cartons of King's Mountain - they taste pretty much like the Kentucky's Best (have smoked those before) and they are 9 bucks cheaper per carton than the ones I was smoking. Actually the ones I had been smoking began at the price the King's Best are at now - they've gone up to 26 bucks per carton!!

I have to go to town this morning - forgot to refill my prescription and I need to mail some eggs for a swap (was supposed to do it yesterday
sad.png
) I also need to put a check in the bank - I hate checks, wish folks would pay in cash - I'm going to insist on it from now on.

I love it when broodies hatch babies - last time (with Jr.) I took the babies, cause I didn't feel safe where they were or with the weather - but with these two ladies, they'll get to keep their babies so I can see little fluffies running around with Mamas. Yay Spring!!!

Out at the cig store by Day & Day - I usually go to the one by the old Walmart, but they were out of Hubby's smokes, so we went to that place - she did say they were gonna go up next week again.
Maybe he put his prices up higher before they had to go up? (I mean whoever you buy yours from).

Hmmm, maybe I ought to go and buy more today before they go up

Yeah, I know, tell Hubby that

It's all part of his "filing system"
lau.gif
he likes to put things in their own places, and with multiple bators, he can keep more detailed notes and such.

Filling a cabinet bator and leaving it alone for 3 weeks would be too easy.

It wouldn't surprise me if he did. He probably did raise the price, since there was such a 'demand' for them (me once a week and dad once every 1-2 weeks). That's okay, I'll know where to go now
big_smile.png
Cheap old man, he is always doing stuff like that. It is one of those little 'mom and pop' stores, they buy everything at retail, then jack up the prices.

Hey, I have a list of DVDs I'm selling on the everything else BST forum. Anyone want any??

My kids went to see Cloverfield at the theatre - I think Jon pir-... ummm, obtained a copy of it...., though, so they have that one.

The call ducks have fits on me every time I go to give water or feed in there. They want out so badly!! Poor babies, but I hate to let them out and risk losing my one last female.

This nice weather has been great though - (well, until today) I had the windows open for three solid days and nights and it dried it out in the duck coops a lot.

It's so windy out there today they'd probably be blown away if I let them out anyway
