Kentucky people

There really aren't any secrets....just hard work from the brooder through adulthood. It takes everything, correct feed, clean water, medications, insecticides, close monitoring.... and a nice warm bath a few days before the show (complete with beak trim, toenail trims)!

I just read the article. I have been in Berea most of the day.

I am very happy that it was printed. I am still bitter about having to move my Silkie flock to Paris after a neighbor complained about my rooster crowing, but at least I can still keep laying hens for eggs.

I hope that it is an idea that catches on.

Welcome Cherokee! There are lots of wonderful people here!

Hey Casey, Haven't seen you here for a little bit. Are you busy showing? We missed you at Kentuckiana!

And how are you feeling Kentuckysilkies? Have you got your hens yet? Darned neighbors. I'm lucky I can see some houses, but I'm so far in th middle of nowhere, that I'm the only one complaining, and it's about gas prices!!!!

Congrats to Turbo on his family's success at Kentuckiana!

And Chickencop, yeah, nice pictures. Half of them are mine. If it looks silly and off the wall, its mine. Did you see the people with the blow dryer at the show. I'm gonna get me one! I don't even have a blow dryer for my hair, and I'm getting one for the chickens!

Hey Yolonda, I am adjusting to not being able to run any more. I have a huge garden planted at my nephew's place. It is really keeping me busy. My Silkie flock is just now becoming content with their new home and are beginning to produce eggs at an acceptable rate.

I got three layers from my friends in Flemingsburg. They are giving us me and Michael all the eggs we can eat.

Casey, it is good to see you posting again.

Hello to all Kentucky chicken lovers! I live in Simpsonville, and I have had chickens for 2 yrs now. My first birds were two half banties and an EE. This year I have 15 Ameraucana bantams, a lavender Belgian D'uccle, and a lavender Jap/OEGB cross. I also have 3 EE hens, 4 Iowa Blue hens, 10 Delawares, 10 Dominiques, and 10 Buckeyes. The Dels, Doms, and Bucks are meat birds. This is my first experience with raising meat birds, so I chose three breeds to see which birds did best for me. I have my birds in two different tractors that I move every day. I went to my first show recently, the one that was in Shelbyville on May 17th. I walked in and was hooked immediatly! Thank goodness my husband decided not to go because I endede up spending something like four hours there! I would walk down one row after the other, and when I got to the end I started over again. I just couldn't get enough. Before I left I joined the Kentuckiana Poultry Club.

I chose heritage breeds for the same reason I grow heirloom veggies- I think it is important to protect and propagate these dissapearing genes. Plus, they are a part of our history. And besides, who wants to have the same 'ole boring thing as the neighbors"

I have some chickies for sale as well, is it ok to post this message here? They are local pick up only. I have 7 week old Ameraucana banties in the following colors: wheaten (hen or pair), Buff (roo), Brown Red (hen or pair), and lavender (hen). I got these birds from a member of the Ameraucana Breeders Club. They are nice birds, I just need the room. The wheaten hen is 25$. I can add a wheaten, blue wheaten or splash cockrel for 5$. The brown red hen/pair is the same price. The lavender hen is 30$. I really hate to let her go, but I need the room. The Buff roo is a special little friend of mine and I really want him to go to a good home. He will fly up into my lap and sit on my knee. He is 10$, but I will throw him in for free with the lavender hen. These birds are really neat! They are friendly with charming little personalities. If anyone is interested let me know.

turtleblossom ,

I think I met you at the show in Shelbyville. Didn't I sign you up? I'm glad to see you here. I was going to call Walt and get your email address to see how the flock was doing. Wasn't the show great? If you still have the birds for sale in August, you can sell them at th state fair. Are you planning on entering any? You should. It's so much fun. I think all the club members will be there. That's where I got signed up. All the people there are wonderful. I was in over my head last year and people kept helping me.

Tom,

Will you be able to run after your rehab is complete? And glad to hear the flock is settling in and starting to lay again. It seems like any little thing stops them for at least a day. I got some bantam sumatras a few weeks ago, and they are starting to up the egg production.
