Hey guys,

I incubated some chicks and they hatched a couple days ago. I've been feeding them scratch and peck chick starter and water w/Apple cider vinegar (With the mother). 4 Cups to 1 tsp ratio. And no, not apple cider to water as my husband loves to clarify lol. Anywho we came home and this guy was dead. When we laid him on the cardboard this dark yellow liquid came out of its mouth. Any ideas as to what that is and whether it was the cause of the chicks passing? Thanks a bunch. I just joined recently and this seems like the kindest platform of people!

I'm sorry for your loss.

Without a necropsy it would be hard to know what happened.
Your feeding Scratch and Peck - are you providing chick grit as well?

I haven't been able to find any chick grit at the farmers stores, they only have grit for chicks 8 weeks and up. I just got back from checking my local store again. I have medicated purina chick starter as well.

With Scratch and Peck, if I am not mistaken, they do recommend grit to be given free choice since the feed is "whole". You may be able to order chick grit?
If you can't source grit, then give the chick starter.
