Knitters/Crocheters, need your input

Quote:
I love Addi turbo lace point circulars, and use them almost exclusively, they come in all sizes and are not for just lace projects. I love the sharp tip, seamless join and no memory cord, so its always willing to go the way you need it to. They are a few dollars more expensive than bamboo, but very worth it in my opinion. I like bamboo double points for some slippery yarns as well, but not as often. I am not a fan of all the interchangeable sets out there, I find them too fiddly and a PITA if you have more than one project going. Also, its hard to justify spending all that money on a set, when I have most sizes already. For a new knitter just getting set up, it may be worth it.

I love malabrigo, most all the types, and most of the Cascade yarns are nice. Berroco vintage is also a nice wool/acrylic blend that I like, and its cheap too. I knit almost exclusively with wool, but live in Maine, so that make sense for me. For sock/DK weight, I like The Sanguine Gryphon website, she is an independent dyer and makes the most luscious cashmere blend yarns, but I don't think she sells wholesale.

In a yarn shop I love a warm welcoming place to sit and knit, chat and mingle with other knitters. An online presence is nice, not absolutely necessary though. I like lots of available expertise if I run into a problem and classes I can take occasionally to expand my skills or just get out of my house for an afternoon.

Maybe this is more info than you want - but I am a bit of a nutty knitter.

Now a nutty knitter with 15 chickens, and I am just 1 cat away from the crazy cat lady stereotype as well.

Good luck with your shop!

It sounds like you got some great ideas from this thread. Let us know how it goes when you get it up and running. I wanted to chime in and suggest something that they do at our local quilt shop that may be a good fit for you. There is a church group here that quilts for the homeless. They get together all the time. The quilt shop near me offers them a discount. Word tends to spread a little faster about your place word of mouth than if you advertise. I know that there is an organization that collects crocheted/knitted hats for babies. Way-FM supports them and collects the hats (not sure when). If you could find a really good deal on a large quantity of yarn, perhaps you could offer a discount along with a flyer for them to your customers. If you were to be a collection point for people to drop off their donation, not only would you be helping out a wonderful group, but you would also be getting some traffic in your shop if it generates enough interest. Anyway, it was just a thought, inspired by what I have seen happen right down the road.

Awesome ideas everyone!

I have so much yarn, tools, accessories and books coming in this week and next. I am really excited!

We created a facebook page, so if you want to participate and tell us about your knitting projects, please join us!

JanaBanana1-Hi neighbor, I hope to see you if you come up to Ione!

sheaviance1- We absolutely will be giving back to this community! Great ideas! Our quilt guild does make quilts for those less fortunate and we hope to get going soon on local projects as well.
