Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

@BlueBaby Do you cook the carrots for your chickens? Cut them up? Maybe I’m doing something wrong that my girls wouldn’t touch them? I boiled them to soften them up a little, but got zero interest.

No, I don't cook them for the chicken's, nor my dog. They like them raw. For the dog, I just cut the end's off. For the chicken's, I slice them in half lengthwise, and if it is a fatter carrot those will get quartered lengthwise. They are a treat, not the food. :gig

That's a whole lotta carrots. I wonder if reluctant carrot eaters would like them shredded, more worm like I guess. I know for me carrots are too hard but shredded are fine.

I haven't actually shredded them for the chicken's, but I did use a vegetable peeler once when I was making something for myself and hubby. As I peeled the carrot's the peeling's went into the bowl along with the peeled cucumber skin's. They are it up.

Mine like carrot peelings.

For humans 5 nut patties use a large carrot & an egg.

Good morning Kris :frow

I haven't tried it myself, but I've read that if you bury them in sand and put them in a cool dark place they'll last for months. Search "preserving carrots" on youtube.

I’m thinking I may be able to store them in my brooder totes in the barn? It will be plenty cool this winter outside, it’s just going to be keeping the mice out of them! I’ll try the peelings raw with the girls today, I thought they might prefer them softer so I cooked the last bunch I tried to give them. Don’t worry, they are still getting their chicken feed, and not too many treats. These “feed carrots” are basically the ones deemed unsellable in the store. They are short and twisted or broken and meant as horse treats or pig feed. There’s nothing wrong with them except they aren’t “pretty”.

Some of our crawlspace is going to be used as a root cellar or I may build one (with concrete blocks, I don’t mind working with those or bricks!) under the deck off the dining room once the house is finished and the building inspector is out of our hair. I would love to can them, but I don’t have a pressure canner yet, or anywhere near enough jars! I do like sauerkraut though, so I guess it’s time to try some with carrots as well!

Thanks everyone. I have to say I was looking at that cockerel I mentioned earlier today... and he has blue earlobes! He’s also Andrew’s favorite in the bunch, I just may have one less chicken in the freezer than I planned! I’m not sure if the girls will accept him though.

It looks like the pour might be happening this Friday, but no guarantees where the weather is concerned. @Ribh, And all my other Aussie friends... I’m doing my best to send the rain your way for what it’s worth. You need it more than we do, and if any of that dispicable white stuff comes you’re welcome to it as well.

We will gladly accept any wet stuff you send our way! ;)

However I’m really feeling the last week of hard work... so maybe... I might stick to cokoking and a little cleaning up (very overdue)

You certainly deserve a break Kris. Don't overdo it and injure your shoulder, or anything else, again. That would really throw a spanner in the works!
