Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Well, some potentially good news. I’m looking at meat birds again! I was considering maybe bowing out with the pandemic panic but the person I ordered with last year is wanting to do them again. I’m going to try a different approach and trade the feed and raising of his for the upfront cost of the chicks, as he only wants to net 12 birds or so. That should about even out for cost. For my labor I’m hoping to get some garden space and access to water for the summer. We are still working out the details. I’ve been patching and painting the place he just moved out of, it was supposed to be rented by the first of April, but again the panic has struck deep.

There is lots of trading and bartering going on in the community. For the most part we are pulling together and taking care of each other. I’m slowly making a dint in my egg stockpile, Giving them away to anyone who needs them and selling to those who can afford to pay. Shopping trips and feed runs are being shared whenever possible to limit the number of trips needed into town. I find it interesting how well things are going. Also coincidental that not that long ago (early 2020? Or late 2019?) there was an interview regarding our food security, challenges in local food production and marketing, cost, availability and such. DH and I were intentionally excluded by his family, but accidentally stumbled on them as we were leaving for some time sensitive errand. Turns out they had specifically asked to speak to us as well, though we never got the message. Andrew of course left me to muddle my way through it with them.

that’s about where things are here, not too much has changed...

I’m glad the community is looking out for you and you guys are doing ok.

It’s a pity about his family ☹😡😤. I admire your ability to (mostly) ignore them and be the better person.
