Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Hi everyone! Yes, I’m still around just not much free time right now. Hoppy has taken a turn for the worse, and we are in a palliative care situation. I will probably need to put her down this weekend, so I’ve been getting as much snuggle time in as possible while trying to coax her to eat and drink. In other news, the house is still on pause, and FIL had BIL catch a gosling and they stuffed it in with my chickens.

The gosling “escaped” while I was moving the chicken tractor the next morning. Well,TBH and because I know no one here will rat me out on it, I gave it back to it’s parents as soon as we got back to the trailer. Daddy Gander was trying to beat his way into the tractor and not happy at all. All the chickens were traumatized. They had also chased off the other baby who was missing for several hours but reappeared just at dusk. It hid very well, and I escorted it to the pond and parents. Needless to say I was steamed.

I got reamed out for our sausage flyer, because someone called the aunt in law about ordering sausage. It is a $200 order so I’m still pretty happy about it, and I was able to get the call the second time around. I also flipped out because they let the cows into the area with my chickens. I shouldn’t worry about it because it won’t be a problem. Well, we came home to a whole new “arrangement” of chicken tractors, several escaped chicks, and I was very angry. I believe this is the first time Andrew has seen me truly furious, and I lost it completely at him. Yesterday was damage control, as it was too late when we got in to do much more than immediate necessities so the chickens could get to bed. I am short two meat chicks and there are at least ten with injuries ranging from bruised feet and legs, through lacerations and missing foot scales, and a few broken toes. None of the older chickens were hurt, as they are more maneuverable than my little meaties.

I’m probably going to be a little random in showing up online for a while. But I’m going to try to be on more often. I’m stretched a little thin and trying to keep up with things on three different properties right now, chickens here, gardening new the town, and with chickens being fostered on another property as well! Take care everyone, and I will try to be by more often.
So sorry to hear about Hoppy Kris. :hugs She had a wonderful "retirement" with you.

You really sound run off your feet at the moment and the thoughtless sabotage is not helping :rant

I really hope the house gets to lock up stage before the end of the year and maybe you would be allowed to put a lock on the "home paddock" gate? :fl

Edit
P.S. How did the customer get your Aunt-in-law's number for sausage ordering???

I do plan on having several fences around the house site where the cows and sheep will not be allowed... a little something about weight distribution, hooves, and (comparatively) fragile plastic infiltrators on the septic field.

As to the phone number; it was a courtesy, and an honest mistake by a new Islander. It’s listed in the community phone book and has been posted by a cousin in several (failed) “marketing” attempts (pics of full lamb and 1/4 beef hanging carcasses in the cold room doesn’t exactly equal good advertising :he and I like eating meat but... :sick really?) on the Facebook forum, so it’s not exactly private... and after fielding many questions about the beef and lamb sales, which we then had to re-direct to her, even before the flyer, we offered free delivery for any Farm products and put the number on our flyer for any Lamb, Beef, or wool inquiries.

Since the Covid, and a few (truly and completely unsolicited) FaceBook community forum plugs from happy sausage customers, Farm meat sales have also skyrocketed (they even are finally getting rid of some 2018 products, at a discount). A well respected couple openly and mistakenly thanked the “Campbell farm” for their delivery order (my eggs and chicken) and it snowballed from there. It was an honest misunderstanding, but of benefit to the entire farm. Apparently many people would prefer to place their entire orders through us, but that doesn’t work for the Farm.

I'm relieved to hear about the private fencing. I had visions of the in-laws waltzing into your house and garden whenever they pleased 24/7 because "after all, it's our farm" 😱

Great news about your business taking off!

You would think taking orders for each other would be no big deal. Everyone does well and it would be easier for the customer. Oh well.

I am glad business is booming. That's great news.
