Ms. Lewis Rich :

Fr. Chuck,
Do you plan on going to the Kentuckiana Show?
I hope to show there this May. My Bantam Cochins, maybe my silkie hen and my showgirl, and what ever else looks good in the Spring. Seems like a long way off! Winter months drag for me.
Also want to show at the Ky. State Fair this year have to look up dates, maybe the Ky. group can meet there this year.

Yes I plan on going to the show, unless something comes up that prevents me from doing so. Don't know if I'll have anything to show or not though.

The Kentucky State Fair dates for 2009 are August 20th -30th, 2009. The Poultry Exhibits are usually the first week-end of the fair along with the pigeons and rabbits.

Whoever was looking for some dairy type goats there was an ad on Craigslist for some the other day. Same for pigs.

Well, today is day #23 for the eggs in the bator and no pips, no hatches, should I pitch the eggs or give them one more day? I'm afraid they may have gotten to cold during shipping and will not hatch.

I'm really really interested in you black Aust. I have sent you a pm and never heard anything. What are you asking for chicks? Just let me know when you hatch them. thank you

Saw this on craigslist-louisville today

I have a laying flock of 9 hens, 1 cock, and 4 chicks that are about a month old. I need to sell them asap. The flock consists of Buff Orpingtons and Easter Egg pullets. All are under a year old, Most started laying about 2 months ago, I cant give the eggs away quick enough. Also have a pair of Bantam Rhode Island Red's. They are show quality, very nice birds, the pullet just started laying this week. They are of very good type with good deep color all the way to the skin with no speckling on the wings. I would like to sell these to someone that would be interested in showing them and not just letting them run around and ruin their type. If interest please give me a call at 270-268-9656 THANKS JAMES

Hello! I have 3 boys who eat a dozen eggs every 4-5 days and I thought I might invest in 2-3 laying hens (I think I want laying hens). Live at Ft. Knox KY, have about an acre of land with our house. I've done some basic research on the webb but still have questions
1. What type of hen/chicken should I be looking for?
2. How old should they be?
3. Will I have to put a fence up or will they stay in the yard? Yard has trees on 2 sides, house on the 3rd and is open to the neighbors yard on the 4th side.
4. What do you do with them when they stop laying?
5. Best place to buy in the Louisville area?

Thanks....everyone on here sounds like they really enjoy this experience.

I hope this posts in the right place!

I'll try to answer your questions as best I can, I'm sure there are others that will chime in.

1) Type of chicken: Depends on whether you want a brown egg layer or white egg layer or a rainbow egg layer. For brown eggers you can try Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds or Orpingtons. For white eggs you can try Leghorns, Anconas, Minorcas, Rainbow eggers you'd get Ameraucanas

2) Pullets will start laying sometime around the 15-16 week mark, maybe later, depends on the breed.

3) Chickens will roam a bit in their search for food. It would be best to have a secured run and coop for them so they don't become targets for neighborhood dogs, cats, hawks and other forms of predators. You can allow them free range time if you want under supervision if you have a problem with predators in your area.

4) Well chickens can live several years. They do go through a molt when they will stop laying, but they will resume laying again once the molt is over. Hens are most productive during their first year or so. You can try and rehome your non producing hens or you can butcher them and put them in the stew pot. Older birds are usually not tender enough for things like roasting or frying.

5) Well there is a weekly sale at the stockyards in Shelbyville, but best advice is don't just buy on impulse, ask questions and make sure that the birds are healthy.

A pullet is a female chicken under the age of 1 year, after that they are called hens. A Cockeral is a young rooster under 1 year.

Been looking at coops and read some things about open air coops...just shade and roosts and a box for laying. Will that suffice in KY or will they need a "house" to stay warm?

Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge.
