Lame Duck Question..

Yes, she..? Has a raspy quack like she has a cold. When do they get their drake feathers? Is there any other tell tell signs?

Voice is usually the youngest sign. Drake feathers come in anywhere from 10-15 weeks, usually, I think.

Ok, I sprayed her/his? Vent with Poultry Care for vent prolapse, I will but Coconut oil on it now to keep it moist-thank you. A vet is not possible..unfortunately. I will have to do what I can for her!

I have never seen one prolapse that young, but I guess anything is possible, because that is what it looks like to me.
I think others have also used honey, but my mind is drawing blank at the moment.

Honey is good too another thing to keep in mind is flies you want to keep her inside especially if flies are still around to keep them from laying in the exposed tissue. I’ve never seen poultry care for vent prolapse maybe that’s all you need.

It looks so much worse than I thought...
I bought some Vetericyn Plus Poultry Care, says it is for multiple things plus Vent Prolapse. Also got Pick-No-More cover up lotion when/if is reunited with the others.

Those are feathers on the bottom. All the feathers are gone..I have no idea.

This definitely does not look good.

That sounds to me like the sound they make just prior to getting their true "drake" voice.
It's possible if it is indeed a drake, that it may have had its manhood hanging out and the chickens thought they found a worm.
It looks like it could be infected to me. I think the vet. Spray or maybe even just triple antibiotic ointment would be good to keep on it.
The leg issue. . . oh boy. I actually gave one of my call ducks ibuprofen for a leg problem and it seemed to help.
Also @CayugaJana gave me some turmeric capsules to try. I don't know how much for a dosage to tell you. . .I just used a butter bowl for water and put a capsule in it and tried to stir it up.
It did seem to help.
About all I know to do is try to keep it still and off of the leg for a while.
Or try the sling like wv. Suggested.

Keep the duck confined as much as possible. Do you have any preparation H and ketoconazole? Put both on the vent. I would do as Shaw suggested and get the duck to eat as much of 1 turmeric capsule full a day. However you can get it down the duck.

Well. . it does look similar.. But not exactly the same. And factoring in that the chickens were picking at it It's hard to say. I have read One possible contributing factor for yeast infections in ducks is lack of bathing, which is likely in this case if the leg has been hurt for a while causing it to not bathe.

I did not notice an odor, the vent was very dry except for the feathers around the vent are yellowish and look wet. It doesn't look as if something came out but it does look swollen. She has taken at least two baths this past 7-10 days. her vent area was dirty about two weeks ago, I put her in pool, then she got into the pool herself a Couple days after, then she was in the pool two days ago. I gave her a bath today. And, that is just what I've seen, there were possibly more.
I am sure that yesterday was the first day for the bleeding, I def would have noticed it before!

I will start her on an anti inflammatory, turmeric powder and a baby aspirin, keep ointment on the vent and keep her/him confined. I will give her ACV soak/bath daily...and we will see how it goes!

I am just trying to recall stuff I read about the yeast infections in ducks when I was having my problem and that was one theory I remember reading along with possibly of an egg being broken inside that started it. My duck that got this didn't bathe regularly and she was prone to laying soft shell eggs. I was unable to save mine it had gotten too bad before I figured it out.
I hope yours is a different issue all together

I understand, I was just worried about the others. They have a small swimming pool that I dump and refill once a week-it is so nasty at the end of the week! Sorry that yours didn't make it. Had the chickens not started pecking at her, I would have never known! I thought she was dirty because she sits a lot.

My husband and I are debating on whether we should cull her or give her more time. We are a farm and these are farm animals not our pets but still I'm having a hard time culling her. I just want to give her a chance. If I do all that I can within reason and we still end up having to cull her then fine but I would love nothing more than for her to pull through! I just don't want her to suffer!

Does anyone know if ducks get fly strike like chickens can? I’m wondering if there was some other wound that got infected, instead of prolapse, since this ducking is so young. Maybe it’s old enough, I’m just trying to think of other possibilities, just in case.

I'm quite sure they can. Maybe not as likely because of swimming.. But I think I remember betty saying she didn't see any maggots. .
But then again that could also be what the chickens were picking at.
