Langshan Thread!!!

I told Mikaela that I would post some pics of the younger Langshans that hatched from eggs from her stock.  They are cuties with nice wide bodies and I think have a lot of potential.  I do have two 17 week old blue pullets from Mikaela's stock that I haven't taken pics of yet.  Cheryl gave them to me and they are beautiful!  I'll try to get some pics of them in the next few days.

Now that I look back again, I changed my mind. I liked how wide his back is but didn't notice the pinched tail or the slope of his back. I guess I'd like to see a fuller breast too. I guess I was figuring the tail was slow developing and would come with age since he's only 14 weeks old.

Thank you, Mikaela & Jim! You didn't hurt my feelings at all! I want to learn and I don't want to keep a bird just because he's pretty colored. I want a good body conformation first and foremost. #2 Biggie Little and #5 are my favorites but I do want to show you two shots of #2's comb and also a top shot of his back. See how the back of his comb is starting to lay over? Do you think that's going to be a problem?

The older splash roo must be around 25 weeks old. I would guess that he is 2-4 weeks older than the other cockerels in the group and they are 22 weeks now. I'm sure on their age because I hatched them. This older one came from Meek's line too but someone else hatched him and passed him on. I was concerned that he didn't have the nice upside down bowler hat body shape and that his body was too narrow. Thank you for that confirmation! I may not end up with a splash roo and that will be okay.

I've noticed that the comb can tend to lay over during the shortening of the days. BUT, it is something to watch out for.

What are you feeding them right now? Is he with the other males and getting picked on still?

I'd give him another cuple weeks to see what happens. I have a NH cockerel that had a really bad twist. Now I need to do a double take because I need to really look to see it. If it does continue to flop I wouldn't use him. If it straightens back out you will need to cull hard for it in the offspring. I like how wide he is though.

Is anyone else getting a huge plethora of eggs??

I've turned off the lights in the barn and am getting 8+ eggs a night from my 9 hens. Ridiculous!
I wish that I was getting that many! The only ones I have laying right now are 3 new layers and one golden sex link hen. The rest of them are molting or too young.
