Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Pics
I have been working on the LF Browns for several years but have not gotten them right yet. They were originally standarized in 1965 along with the GL, SL and Barred and even though there were browns owned by Alex Duffy that were capable of winning shows the browns did not survive long and by the early 1980's were practically non-existent, they have since gone by the wayside and are no longer in existence to my knowledge and there are no accurate records as to how they were made.
The brown cochin is a variety which shares the same color pattern as the dark brown leghorn. There are some black and white pictures out there of Mr. Duffy with one of his winning Dark Brown hens from the 1960s and she was a dandy.

Trying to find someone that has some available LF Black Cochins (would consider White or Blue) in Oklahoma or would drive to another state for the right birds. I have been a waterfowl breeder for many years. My husband tolerates it but is really want his own thing and just feel in love with Back Cochins from a show that we were at and keeps dreaming about them. I have chickens that I like and othr breeds such as cochins to help hatch out some of my hard to hatch waterfowl eggs but he isn't too interested in those since they don't look like the Black Cochins at the show.So he won't show these birds but I am looking for good quality so he has a good start and then can continue to breed and improve and then he will get a good understanding of what I have to do with my Indian Runners and Exhibition Rouens. Any suggestions would be helpful but not looking for hatchery birds. I tried a few of those last year and it didn't work. The plan is try to hunt down Jim and Patti Zimmerman next month in Kansas but I'd really like to find someone around here.

Thank you for the information. I would like to try to take on the project of brown Cochins. Right now I have Partridge, Buff, Golden Laced, Black, Blue, Silver Laced , and white large fowl Cochins. What would I start with to try and get brown. Who would i have to breed to who to get some sort of a brown? I am fairly new to chicken genetics. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can tell you that breeding a black male to white females will get you started, this typically will produce blacks, whites and brown reds if the whites are dominant whites. I crossed my brown reds with buff and got the brown base color with black stippling but the brown was too light colored and the hackle and breast were buff instead of rich bright red in the hackle and a lighter brown breast. This is where I am at now. I belive Mr. Duffy used the black x white mating as well to get started on his browns, he may have used white males on black females which is what I am trying this year.

I think I'll try that breeding on my bantams. I have two older bantam white hens who need waking up! lol

And a very enthusiastic bantam black roo who keeps saying. "Put me in, Coach"

I'll try the black male on the white females :)
